Well there are a lot of people trying to get the drinking age lowered because they say that minors binge drink too much and if they could buy and drink legally they wouldn't have too.
I agree with this. Minors binge drink because it is something they can't have all the time. They drink more because they don't know the next time they will get to drink. Same as if you go to a nice restaurant you eat all of your food because you don't know the next time you will get to go.

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is battling this. They say that it will just make more kids get in cars and kill themselves or others.
That is complete bullshit. If it was legal, kids wouldn't have to sneak and drive back home drunk because it would be legal for them to stay at the party and spend the night. And if the cops came they wouldn't have to run to their cars and drive away paranoid. They could just turn down the music and continue to enjoy they fiesta.

If the drinking age was lowered than kids would start drinking when they still lived with their parents and somewhat have a guide to teach them about alcohol, kinda like when you get your driving permit. With it at 21 most kids are away and have no one with years and years of experience to teach them safety.

What is proposed now is that if you are 18-20 and you take a 40-hour class on alcohol and drinking safety you can get a licence to buy/consume alcohol.
MADD has said that this wont work. They compare it to the DARE program and how it failed. Well MADD you are retarded. The DARE program was not anything like the proposed program. They also say I quote.
"A 40-hour alcohol education course to teach 18-20 year-olds to drink responsibly will teach them nothing. In fact, it stands to create a situation in which teens overestimate their ability to handle alcohol. "
This is like saying that in health class when you learn about protection and the hazards of having unprotected sex. But what you get out of it is the mind-set that you can have all the unprotected sex you want and nothing bad will happen.

I think it is in America's best interest to lower the drinking age not only for economical reasons but to give the youth of our nation, who is quit possibly deciding the leader of our country for the next four years a little more respect.

I agree with you, when the age was increased the binge drinking stats increased, especially for people in that age group.

drinking classes are a joke....nice avatar

-- Posted by jamesish at 4:09 pm on Aug. 20, 2008

I think it should stay the same. I've heard both sides. And we're old enough to die in war, but dont give me a drink.

I don't think that it would lower drinking for minors. To reinforce it and say that it's okay isn't going to help anything.

I just posted on another thread like this.

But I say lower it.

I can't really be arsed to read that... but the age is 18 in England and i don't personally think it helps. 18 yr olds still want to binge drink.
I mean, i know underage people can get alcohol, but it must be harder if the age is 21, because they probably know less people that are 21, plus it's harder to look 18 then 21 obviously.
I think 21 is better personally because people are supposedly more mature by then.... however i'm happy with it being 18 in england! wouldn't want it to change.

hahah it would be too unfair to you ayy?

-- Posted by boom spencer boom at 4:11 pm on Aug. 20, 2008

if you lower the age it just makes it legal for them to binge drink.
ANDANDAND
It makes so the cops cant punish them

-- Posted by BrokenBelief at 4:11 pm on Aug. 20, 2008

Not to mention the wonderful example of statistics.  The U.S. has the highest legal drinking age, and also has the worst statistic for teens in car wrecks.  That in itself is a bit of a reason to rethink the current situation.  Obviously it's not making the teens more responsible.  Maybe more exposure to legal drinking and legal driving would help.

-- Posted by zombie4life at 4:11 pm on Aug. 20, 2008

rebellious but legal things get abused all the time. people would die of liver cancer much more often and at earlier ages if the age was lowered. because I mean hey it feels good to be tipsy or drunk. Alcohol OWNES your liver. *not necessarily liver cancer but liver failure. and brain damage. Brains are valuable. and if you look at peoples brains who drink compared to people who don't, its a drastic difference, do we really want 18 year olds being more fucking stupid than they already are.

LOL. Bullshit.

Alberta is keeping the drinking age 18, BC is keeping it 19.
They aren't going to let kids who can't DRIVE or vote yet, buy fucking booze.

If you're an adult when you're 18, I think you should be able to do whatever you want, drinking including.
