Need opinions on the best forum scripts out there.

Please break it up in categories and explain why you think it is a good choice.

For example

Opensource

phpBB3 - Explanation why.

Paid

Vbulletin - Explanation why.

What do you need them for?

I am making a forum, I do not feel the need to develop my own. I want to see what is out there and what the best option is.

phpBB cause it's free of course.

I have the money to purchase a paid forum script, but what makes these scripts worth the money and why not just choose phpBB because it is free?

I dislike vbulletin. Don't know why, just do.

Invision Power Board

The featureset is vastly superior to phpBB. It's more flexible, and easier to customise and modify. I find the moderation tools of IPB to be the most intuitive of them all. It also just feels more professional.

To be honest, your best bet would be to try them out yourself. It's clear why the licensed ones are superior to the free ones, but from that point on it's pretty much down to preference.

vbulletin is the best.

its easy to use.

LiveWire was originally based on IkonBoard which is free and as you can see, easily customisable if you learnt PERL. As far as i know, LiveWire has very little of the original Ikonboard code left, david has modified, customised and optimised it to hell and back.

I think IPB is by far the best!

I run a website on the script, its just so dynamic and professional..

Its created by the same guys who created the script for LW!

There are a lot of XSS holes in Livewire's script though, I need something up to date and secure (with constant updates).

Ikonboard will have been heavily updated from the version David used. This is essentially a different script.

Which I can tell David doesn't know too much about security.

My new favourite is http://www.mybboard.net/

I've been very impressed with this one so far (free of course).  Vbulletin is good, but it's not good enough to pay for...

As for why etc, test them yourself, its a fairly personal thing which one you like.

Livewire has never really needed security, i mean a) whos gonna bother? b) what would they gain?

David closes the holes as he finds them but really, noone can gain anything from hacking LW so why would they bother

MyBB is a great free forum script, easy to use.

IPB is a great paid forum script, fantastic to use.

-- Posted by bambie at 4:20 pm on Aug. 30, 2008

A really good free forum script

http://www.simplemachines.org/

Lots of mods and themes and more all for free.

-- Posted by Secretlove at 8:18 am on April 14, 2009

IMHO PHPBB is the best free one. It also has quite a big bunch of hacks and mods. If you want a full CMS based on phpBB I recommend Icy Phoenix.
