I tried joining the Creative Arts club at my school one time, and everyone in the club immediately pegged me as shallow/fake/untalented because I don't come off as really fucking weird. Yes, I had to admit it, but everyone in the club was strange. They acted strange, they dressed strangely. They were, simply put, STRANGE. There's nothing wrong with that, more power to them, but they automatically assumed that because I didn't act like "strange" like them, that I was a fake, or I sucked at painting. I don't actually. I reckon I'm pretty good. Why do I have to look a certain way to be deep? To be quirky? Yes, I'm quirky, but that doesn't tend to play out in my clothing. Why do I have to have a streak of blue in my hair, wear all black, or make strange comments to be as quirky or talented like them? (this refers directly to the type of people who were in the club) Maybe I like dressing in clothes that have  a certain degree of "conformity".
