They are by Dr. Kent M. Keith in 1968 as an undergraduate.

1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

3. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

4. The good you do today, will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

7. People favor underdogs, but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

9. People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

10. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

-_-
Why should these be followed?

Maybe someone should move this to the intellectual forum a little bit later since there probably won't be many responses here.

I LOVE THAT THINGY! They have it in all the mental wards I've been on!

The commandments suck though. They make me giggle.

That got me thinking...

wow...

I... dunno what to say...

-- Posted by The Last Magister at 8:37 pm on Aug. 26, 2008

Fuck that, don't follow them because it's not worth it, trust me. Fuck. That. Entirely.

She is falsely accredited for this poem often but Dr. Kent M. Keith is the true author, and that "it was never between you and them, anyway" was edited by someone else.

I think I've read that she had nothing to do with the version credited to her, someone just slapped her name on there.

If everyone followed these they wouldn't make sense anymore, but World Peace would be easier to achieve.

They should be followed because if no one even tried, then the world would just suck that much more.

So you should follow them for selfish motives

the point is living life to the fullest even though none of it will matter at one point at all

If it's selfish to want to make the world a better place, then I guess so.

From where do you draw that conclusion?

Well I didn't mean that, but this poem is basically saying that things will often suck for you if you do all these things.

Yeah, but that's where you get the people who don't care what happens to them if they can do their part to help others.

Why not? From a somewhat cynical point of view, all these people are doing is making life better for other people who are going to die anyways. Whether or not it was worth whatever they had to suffer is a matter of opinion, and apparently they thought that it was.

You should follow them to become a better person. Who cares that life is going to hurt and at every turn something is going to be there to kick you, you have to work through it not to achieve world peace or anything, but why not make yourself and your life better.
