Keith is the true author, and that "it was never between you and them, anyway" was edited by someone else. So why should those people follow them? Why not? From a somewhat cynical point of view, all these people are doing is making life better for other people who are going to die anyways. Who cares that life is going to hurt and at every turn something is going to be there to kick you, you have to work through it not to achieve world peace or anything, but why not make yourself and your life better.
