It's when the fetus implants in the fallopian tubes.

It isn't just in the fallopian tubes, I thought it was just when the egg gets implanted outside the womb..

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the baby implants and begins growth outside the womb. In the vast majority of cases, the baby starts to grow in the fallopian tube. It reaches a point where it is too large for the fallopian tube to hold it, and in more severe cases the fallopian tube may rupture. This can cause severe internal bleeding, which is possibly fatal for both mother and child. Normally the ectopic pregnancy is spotted before this stage and the baby is aborted.

My mammy had one a few years before she had me. Her tube ruptured and they operated on her to remove it. She was unconscious from the bleeding, and my dad was told she only had a few hours to live. But she was okay in the end. She only has one fallopian tube, though.
