in reality the vast majority are just horny teens, while 'sexual predator' might be a strictly technically correct term, it really gives the wrong message.

-- Posted by vicky91 at 3:54 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

i no its  not lik they are actually perverts and also they shudnt be reading personal messAGES

-- Posted by iconoclast at 3:58 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

as much as i dont seriously give a fuck about this site

calling some stupid 16 year old kid a 'sexual predator' could be potentially very damaging and really is used out of context.

its fair to use the term in extreme cases where it appears like a much older person is soliciting sex in a serious manner

-- Posted by marshmellowman at 5:03 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

I disagree, here's why. I found one member actually requesting sexually explicit photos of a member on a brand new account on more than one occasion. I reported them and they were banned. In this case clearly the sole intention was for attention and to solicit noods. Considering either way it's against the guidelines why not ban them? It's not like they're bringing anything useful to LiveWire.

That's not what he's saying.  Banning them is expected, but calling them a "sexual predator" is just bullshit.

They're still sexual predators, they're looking for sexual photos or relations of young girls/boys. So what, we should water down the word and be politically correct to give a different image? Maybe if they see that they ban those sexual predators they'll be happy they ban them on here and feel slightly safer.

-- Posted by iconoclast at 6:57 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

Usually they're teens, though. When teens seek nude photos of other teens, it isn't called being a 'sexual predator'. It's not watering it down either, it's just plain fucking stupid.

-- Posted by Rastafarian at 7:12 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

We ban people for sexually predatory behavior, which is what many of these silly horny teens have. But we can't ban people as sexual predators because to be a sexual predator you actually have to be convicted first. We had a case where someone threatened to sue because they thought we called them a sexual predator. (lulz)

So if someone is actually banned with reasoning 'sexual predator' it was pretty dumb statement.

I don't see a problem with switching sexually predatory behavior with something like 'continued to try and solicit sexual material' or something thereof, it's really an euphemism though.
Maybe I could use "inappropriately horny" as a DoSS, that would be funny.

-- Posted by iconoclast at 7:19 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

The only reason I'm saying this is not because is not 'technically correct', but because 'sexual predator' is associated with 'depraved middle aged man trying to rape little girls. Same with 'sex offender'. Many who get the designation are fairly harmless, but it has a stigma.

Because of the social context of 'sexually predatory behavior', it's not a good reason.

That's a good point.
Do you have any suggestions for a more fitting reasoning?

'Soliciting sexually explicit material is not permitted' is just fine, kind of like you said before.

Cool.
I'll use that then whenever I put up one of them for a DoS, or at least I'll try to remember, a lot of my DoS statements are robotic now.

i like 'dumb horny teen' as a reason too though

-- Posted by jamesish at 7:31 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

In most obvious cases, 'sexual predator' is fine.  If not sure and member is doing it, 'seeking explicit material' seems fine.

Like a mod can look at that persons posts and topics.  Some sexual predators are just not socially able to fit in like we can.  If every single post is sexual, its almost obvious a sexual troll.  Call them a predator for good measure.

You would have to judge those posts by yourself and make your own standards.

Calling someone a 'predator' is serious shit in modern life and even if someone is a troll I don't see how that's right.

How about not call someone a sexual predator until there's substantial evidence that they are?

Meh, maybe "predator" is a little hard to judge when to use it.  Agreed.

-- Posted by iconoclast at 7:46 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

If anyone remembers, Butters UK was called a 'sexual predatory' for asking Audrey for nudes or something.

-- Posted by jamesish at 7:46 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

O and when you said substantial evidence, what exactly would be substantial?  I doubt Mods are going to bend over backwards.

-- Posted by iconoclast at 7:47 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

Just evidence that they're actually a much older person and attempting to arrange some kind of shady meeting or something.

-- Posted by audrey820 at 8:32 pm on Aug. 28, 2008

The butters uk thing was not for asking me for nudes, tyvm. I think he asked half the site for nudes.

Anyways, prisoner is 100% correct. Calling someone a sexual predator can cause MANY MANY problems for people in real life. A lot of people use the same account name on many sites. And we've had members use their real names as account names. They get googled and their account comes up with sexual predator... that could mean terrible real life consequences for some horny teen who was trying to get nudes.

It's much safer to use pretty much anything else. Soliciting sexually explicit material is safe, but descriptive.
