Any word that describes the Negro will eventually take on negative connotations. Calling them "Negro" is really the correct name for them. It aptly used to describe their race. i.e. the Negroid race. But, this word has had negative connotations associated with it, so they moved on to "colored". "Colored" is something of a euphemism. It hearkens to something cheerful. Nevertheless, Negroes have managed to give the word "colored" a bad connotation, and so they moved on to "black". The word "black" already had negative connotations, and so associating it with the Negroes just made a bad situation worse. Now, the media tries to enforce people calling them "African-Americans". Which is attempting to mix the positive connotations people have with "Americans" with the negative connotations they have with "Africans". This also claims that all Africans are Negroes, which, in all senses, is not accurate. No matter what you call them, the term may start off with having positive connotations, but will always end up having negative connotations. Then they move on to another word. What do you predict the next word will be?

According to Uncle Ruckus, white racists made a crucial mistake in using the word nigger so much because blacks get too use to it, and built up a bit of immunity. So, by rotating (darkie, coon etc. as main slurr) you keep things nice and hurtful.

Dark people could last a whole two years in my opinion.

I'm sure there are MANY Negroes that still get offended by it. And the word nigger was used to describe Negroes, just like 'black people' The only difference is that it was used during slave times.

No, I would rather not call any group of people "sexies" just because every name given to them, eventually, is considered an insult.

1st, I don't like that phrase, 2nd, they are trying to get rid of that phrase because of 'negative connotations' In 3 years or so, 'black people' will be considered a racial slur or something to that extent.

I don't say white people. White = Mediterannean, Nordish, and all mixes of those two (and Alpine). Negro is actually describing Negroes, or Congoids. Caucasian includes Arabs, Jews, and other present Middle Easterners. White has ALWAYS been the word, Black is a new word.

It is not aptly used to describe their race. Negroid comes from "negro" and not the other way around. Negro is spanish for black, and it is exactly as accurate as black is.
What do you predict the next word will be?
The word has changed with every change in the perception of black people in the US. I don't imagine the world will spontaneously change again unless there is a major change in the black consciousness, or the way they're perceived by the country at large. Hey, with mestizos as the majority we may find "négro" coming back into style.

Yes, but that's the name given to them by the Portuguese and was considered the proper English term for all people of sub-Saharan African origin. Negro was created to describe sub-Saharan Africans, and Negroid itself came from that word. NEGRO correctly describes any person of the Negroid(Congoid) race. "Black" isn't the correct term, as it's somewhat new and there is no "Blackoid" race. Negro is not just a Spanish word. It was used by the Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, English(Yes, we used it until the 1970's), French, and others. "Black people" is a silly term and I refuse to use it. It doesn't mean anything. "Black people" is used to describe skin color, yet race is NOT skin deep.

It's not just them saying negro... Their proper name IS negro, and I'll continue to use it.
