I have a implant that allows me to hear out of one ear but I choose not to wear it because it's uncomfortable, so in general almost 100% of the time I can't hear anything. And I was wondering... Are there any other deaf members on Live Wire? And what are your views on deaf people and culture? Should people with the ability to hear have the option to learn American Sign Language along with Spanish and French? And how do you think society views the deaf population in general? In Concord North Carolina, NorthWest Cabarrus High School has the highest percent of deaf children in attendence in the county. Deaf people, at least the one I've met, have no trouble at all interacting with other people. They learn to read lips and I'm able to speak to them as if I were talking to any other person. Though I find myself trying to "sound out" the word a bit more. And there is also a distinctive difference in a deaf person's voice than that of someone who is retarded. (At least I can notice it) So as soon as I hear them talk and it sounds funny, i know that they are just deaf instead of having down syndrome or something like that. I worked with a guy who was deaf (not sure if it was one ear or both, but he had a hearing aid), at first it was kinda strange because his speech is messed up and he talks very fast, but after a while it was like talking to a hearing person. So if I meet a deaf person I'm not taken aback or anything like that. I think we should be offered ASL in school. It was considered in my school when they dropped French, but so far nothing. I would love to learn Sign Language. There are different forms of sign language. Its different for each region. Sign Language in the state can be different from sign language over seas. Yea and most of us do have voice problems. I can talk but I dont like to because I cant hear myself. Therefore I dont even know if im saying it right. They're just people. I guess as a population we could be more sensitive to the fact that deaf people exist and work harder to make things more convenient for them. I do believe that American Sign Language should be taught along with spoken languages. I've always really wanted to learn sign language. I mean, even if it weren't a major course it could at least be offered as an elective. I don't know how society views deaf people. How should they be viewed? I'm in the process of learning more sign, and before i got my hearing aides I mostly read lips, I forced myself to learn because of classes and stuff in high school. My school didn't offer ASL until my senior year, but most people took it as a joke... which was sad... but the town where I lived no one treated anyone with a disability as a human... in my college however, people know we can do every thing that the able bodied can do. if you wanna talk, I'm here... i have 75% hearing loss in my left ear and 80% in my right ear. -- Posted by airemaye at 12:01 pm on Nov. 26, 2008 There's a state deaf school right across the street from my high school, and we have ASL classes. We don't really see being deaf as a big deal in my city, because so many deaf people live here. But sure, and if schools did have more ASL I'd bet quite a few people would take the class, deaf or hearing. It's cool to study. I'm not really sure on the Spanish or French, but mainly just because I don't want to learn them. I don't think any less of these people. Actually, if they are able to understand me still and talk back, then I think much higher of them. I couldn't imagine how difficult that would be to learn. I have very good speech. I can be lazy and not to wear my implant. I am living in hearing world. I play sports all of my life with hearing people. It's pretty fun. I'm pretty normal person. I wouldlove to meet anybody who's deaf on here. just letting you know.
