What is this I hear about some scientists (Sweedish physists I think), doing something next Wednesday? Apparantly its something to do with speeding up atoms (particle accellerator?), and people fear that it could open a black hole or something, and destroy Earth? It was on the news last night, and the applied maths teacher was talking about it to my friend. What's going on? and can I have a link to a site explaining it if possible? And what's this about it having enough power to open a black hole and destroy the planet? :/ I'm not worried, I just want to know what's going on. How could it cause a black hole anyway?

Aren't they trying to recreate the big bang ?

The large hadron collider will destroy the world.

The Hadron Collider is going to be revved up, I guess. The chance that it'll make a black hole is like 1/10000000000, so I wouldn't worry. That's the day I go back to school!

I doubt the swedish are dumb enough to pull one like that

i think that if a black hole can be opened then these scientists need to be arrested, they will keel us all.

OMG! I heard about this on BBC's Horizon programme, weren;t they originally gonna do it november last year or something... This rings bells

you mean the hadron collider thing? don't worry, we'll survive...

Hadron collider. Judging by the name, its for generating power by atom splitting yeah? Or something like particle acceleration?

If we were all gonna die why would they let them do it??

I think that they're trying to recreate the big bang; the particles that they'll be smashing are supposed to like create matter when they collide or some such thing.

That's a very big risk in fairness. Chemistry laws state that matter can't be created or destroyed

My physics prof. said that people who think we are going to die are "damn idiots". All true, He is right. The large hadron collider can't be powerful enough to create a massive blackhole, it may make mini blackholes - but they will die off in less than a second. Not enough for the mini blackholes to build up into a real big one. So, we will surivive.

True, it is, but they're willing to take it in the name of science. The big bang was an anomaly (if it happened?), and the laws may have to be changed if this whole deal is successful.

No. It states that matter and energy must be conserved. By Einstein's general theory of relativity, you can create matter by expending energy, and you can create energy by expending matter. So if they put a whole buttload of energy into this, it is conceivable that they could convert it to matter. FP

Aliens will come thru the blackhole that the large hadron collider will create.

Yeah, but I mean come on, isn't this taking it a bit far? I mean, as a member above said, it would probably only make micro black holes, that wouldn't last a micro second. They've made these already anyway. But still, even though theoretically it is possible, attempting to make matter, by means of massive particle acceleration, is a slight risk, is it not? This is like, speeding atoms up faster than ever before, and though it is unlikely, what if there were major consequences? Physists can't be 100% sure with this, they've never attempted it before. (I'm not worried, just curious)

Ha, that would be good. But she's not against it, she's really excited. It's like Christmas come early for her.

That seems coolies, isit something that will generate power or something and you would need hardly any of it to generate power for millions of homes?

If memory serves, one of the purposes of this is to prove the existence of other dimensions to the four we know of currently, on top of the obvious proving the existence of theoretical particles. I really can't wait for this :D for the record, it's at CERN, in Switzerland, not Sweden.
