I think with either genre, the better music is almost always underground. Most mainstream songs you hear on the radio are poor examples to judge by. Songs with meaningful lyrics seem to always be the lesser known. This holds true, I'll admit, even with bands such as Evanescence, for example. My favorite artist- although, the overplayed songs "My Immortal" and "Bring Me To Life" are not at all the best songs to listen to when forming your opinion of them.
The best rap artists to listen to before judging the entire genre are ones that few people have even heard of. Immortal Technique seems to be one of them. I, myself, have never heard of them, but many people seem to use them as an example. Tupac Shakur also is a decent artist who writes realistic lyrics, even I know that.
As far as rock goes, you have to listen to stuff besides Good Charlotte or Simple Plan to form an opinion of the overall genre. I would reccommend listening to a variety of artists because there are countless sub-genres of rock. There's punk, hardcore, emo, metal (which in itself has several sub-genres of its own- ex: goth-metal, heavy metal, death metal, etc.). It's really impossible to judge all rock based on a few songs because there is such a wide spectrum of sub-genres. The best underground and/or lesser known rock artists include Nightwish, Smile Empty Soul, Lostprophets, Poe, and Taking Back Sunday.
I personally don't care much for rap because most of it's just annoying to me, but I have a lot of respect for the kind that you don't hear on the radio very much even though I don't listen to it either. There are some songs that are an exception however, for example, "Where Is the Love?" by The Black-Eyed Peas. This song has a LOT of meaning in its lyrics, despite the fact that it is horribly overplayed on the radio.

So there ya go. Neither genre is better than the other. It's all a matter of opinion and nothing more.

Very true, it is all opinion.

Yeah they are great. Tarja has the most beautiful voice and she is really pretty too. I wish I could sing like her. Did you know she does lessons? How cool would it be to take lessons from Tarja! whoo...

ok I am done...I am not THAT obsessed with her, I swear

I prefer rock and punk, emo, ska, indie rock, classic rock, metal over anything hip-hop or rap.

Progressive rock is the greatest "genre." Sorry. But its true. It brings in the most talented musicians in their categories, incorporates classical, jazz, and rock together in creative ways that you've probably never even heard of before. But then again, some people like to stick with basic 3 chord crapola, so more prog for me!

-- Posted by yourbrainonsaget at 3:22 pm on Mar. 5, 2005

Pychodelic music is the best I think

-- Posted by ZoG at 10:16 pm on Mar. 5, 2005

One movement of a Bach Cello Suite is a greater achievement than all of the music of the last 50 years combined...

Says I.

-- Posted by Rickenbacker at 7:42 am on Mar. 6, 2005

I guess you have never heard some of the masterpieces of progressive rock. They are equal to if not better than the masterpieces of baroque classical.

-- Posted by iamironman at 7:56 pm on Mar. 6, 2005

for me from best to worst..
rock
blues
punk
jazz
metal
hip hop
country

-- Posted by redefamerica at 6:41 pm on Mar. 8, 2005

hip hop, rap, jazz and rock
thats basically it for me    i mostly listen to all of that stuff even if it is mainstream and is pretty stupid because most of the time they have some great beats to it but what i really like is when songs have real meanings in them and great beats
theyre the best

also what is ska?

-- Posted by project pat at 7:51 pm on Mar. 8, 2005

I LOVE RAP, ONLY GANGSTA RAP THOW LIKE NWA,TUPAC,TOO SHORT AND THREE 6 MAFIA

-- Posted by MetalHead at 2:54 am on Mar. 9, 2005

I'm much more of a metal and rock kinda guy. I used to listen to rap a few years ago but then I pretty much completely changed my taste in music. The closest thing to rap I listen to these days is Linkin Park.
I listen to both popular rock that you'll hear when you turn on the radio like Metallica and also the type that a lot of people don't know of such as Saliva or Drowning Pool.

Rock of any type. Including Metal!!
