Like, you are with the guy and go "Ok, wait, before we take off...is this officially a date or not?" I mean, date or not, why would it matter?  You are just going out to have a good time and if things NATURALLY occur, so what?  Call it whatever you want, a relationship might come out of it and if not, you will have a friend you know you can have fun with and score a free movie, free meal, gifts, etc.
