Unless you experience it first hand, stop being like "I don't understand why people are like "I don't understand what good it does."

I am NOT encouraging harm.

True.

-- Posted by Heart92 at 8:11 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

Some people just don't understand.

-- Posted by Cloud Nine at 8:11 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

You kind of are, even if its not on purpose.  More people are going to want to try =(

-- Posted by omgnowayyy at 8:11 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

I think we got the point in the other annoying topics about this that you responded the EXACT same way.

LIES.

Very true.

-- Posted by xsnortingxashesx at 8:11 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

This is absolutely true. I'm so sick of people on here who know jack shit about cutting trying to give advice on it. Usually, they do a bad job.

-- Posted by 10013028sequoia at 8:11 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

just cuz u feel something doesn't mean everyone else has to feel like that.  they really don't understand it.

-- Posted by Giohughes at 8:12 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

yep pretty much....

-- Posted by ashleyacid at 8:12 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

Thats just how some people are, they wont to understand things they never will unless they experience first hand.

-- Posted by xBlondeVixxenx at 8:12 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

-- Posted by Catacomb at 8:12 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

the thing is it is only a temporary fix and they dont go and try find a way to fix the problem

-- Posted by muphnplutonic at 8:14 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

It's true.
I use to be one of those extremley frustrating, haha, people who just sort of said the whole 'I don't get it, why do you do it, it obviously just causes more pain etc etc'.

I feel bad for saying that now..
Because after experiencing first hand, what I never thought I'd experience, I can tell you that you are exactly right..

But it does actually help, it's just not the best way to do it.
Because it lets out endorphins in which makes you feel good.

So there is some point in doing it..

-- Posted by 7hir7een at 8:14 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

It's true, I don't understand it.  But I sympathize with the feelings that lead people to do it.

-- Posted by sevenshadesofme at 8:14 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

Well said.

-- Posted by Tavis at 8:14 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

I know that I don't know what it's like, I've never done it, but I'm not going to act like I do.

It helps at the moment, but it doesn't help in the long run.

You don't have to have cut to understand it... you just need to realize that certain things don't easily fall under the category of logic.  If we were able to act on logic all the time, the world would be a vastly different place.

There are too many factors in to it... and in general, if you are able to understand that everyone is different, and that everyone copes in different ways (not to mention that everyone has different psychological states), you'll be able to better understand it.

I mean, for me?  I can and can't understand why someone would drink or do drugs to get away.  I would never do it myself, and for that reason, I can't first hand understand how it makes them feel.  But I CAN speculate WHY they do it, and understand by that means.

Just as people sit here and need advice on a crush they might have.  Again... I've never experienced problems like that, and it's never been such an important factor in my life... but I can understand that other people have different values and different things are important to others.

So experience isn't the only thing that makes you understand.  You may be able to relate better if you've been through something similar, but that doesn't mean you can't necessarily "understand".

You're wrong.

-- Posted by Define Your Line at 8:19 pm on Sep. 12, 2008

I do understand what you're saying. I've never self-harmed but I know people who do. I would never tell them that there was no point in what they were doing or anything like that. I understand that people have their own reasons for cutting and no, I will not fully understand it until I experience it first-hand.

This is one major flaw that has been affecting me since the day I came to LiveWire. I have been brought up to be extremely sheltered and therefore oblivious to all of the issues present in today's society. All of the issues on LiveWire are new to me. I don't have experience with practically anything on this site - except for relationships and just general problems.

Being a Support Leader, I try to do the best that I can in addressing as many situations as I can and helping everyone I can. I love helping people and therefore, I feel bad when I don't know how to help someone because of my lack of experience in it. LiveWire has been a learning experience for me and I really do want to learn more about issues that I am not familiar with such as depression, self-harm, sex, etc.

I know what you're saying and you're absolutely right. People who say things like "You have no reason to cut" or "It's pointless and won't solve anything" are just totally ignorant. What they don't realise is that their ignorance will be heard (read) by people who are very vulnerable and emotional and therefore, what they're saying can truly affect them in a negative way. That's why all of us really need to be careful when replying to posts regarding self-harm, depression and suicide.

However, people don't need to necessarily *experience* it in order to fully understand it.  I mean, I don't need to sit here and put a blade to my wrist in order to fully understand how someone who self-harm feels.  I can understand it just as well by learning more about it.  However, I do understand what you mean, there are certain things that come from experience and I respect that.

You're wrong.

I didn't know my opinion could be wrong.
This is new to me, since when can someones opinion be wrong?
