Go to stamp auctions or you can get stamps off ebay. I believe 'Stanley Collins' do books on stamp collecting.

Haha, this, basically. I'm a stamp collector, and that's essentially how I startled although these days I've been collecting pre 1960 stamps for some reason. I definitely recommend getting a stamp album of sorts-- it keeps you organized-- and then get some hinges or mounts.

Buy them. Look for collections online. Save them from letters in the mail

You can search for philatelist order magazines online, go to hobby shops, or start collecting now by going to a post office and buying sheets of commemorative stamps that you like. Some people collect stamps with a similar theme: space for example and do so worldwide Some people collect Full sheets, some collect individuals, some collect first runs. A good way to start out is by getting a collectors book which lists lots of pictures of stamps and you place (in a specially designed holder) the stamp over the picture. First off regardless of how you do it you want to get some nice cloth white gloves, a tweezer with flat tongs, a magnifying glass.
