Just wondering if this actually works. I saw this on youtube
And it's got a really mixed response. Some people are claiming it's fake, cos they tried it on "mythbusters" and it didn't work. Others are claiming they did it as a school project... Does it work or not? It's not like I'm gonna do it, lol, I was just wondering. xxx

Dunno, it's too much of a hassle and it probably only recharges a small amount.

I've seen that too. I have yet to try it but it looks legit.

that would be cool if it did work lol

problem with that they show the ipod charging screen after they move away from the onion... so once the ipod is "plugged in" it doesn't show the onion and then another point is that the chord is really long from the ipod to the onion, and you never see the bottom of it soo you don't know if they are even pluggin in the same chord i think it is very very stupid :(

if it worked, surely they would show you the wire leading directly to it, and it looks like they've plugged one of 2 cables into something under the folder the iPod was placed on...
I don't have an iPod, so I wouldn't be certain but it looks like the cable is too long, they've coiled 2 up and one isn't leading anywhere... but thats my guess

I think it can happen. We talked about lighting a bulb with the energy from an orange. We never did it but I can't see why it wouldn't happen, it all makes sense to me.

I saw another video from that same guy that was obviously fake (as in, completely defies the laws of physics fake), so I would bet good money that this is fake as well without even watching it.

The general idea of using fruit or veg as ready-made ion gradients is solid science, you can record a tiny voltage if you stick a voltmeter into potatos and lemons and so on. Everyone's done that at school.
This video, however, falls under the "magic beans" area of science because you can't produce a voltage using a USB head stuck in a potato and you certainly can't get enough voltage for it to charge something like an IPod.
Either the guy(s) who made the video plugged the USB into a port when it was offscreen or, as the wire is in a coil on top of a strange-looking surface, volatge is being induced in the wire using magnets.
