How many people are with me on this one.. First cars should never be nice. When someone is given a brand new car (or a extremely nice slightly used car) as their first car by their parents? Put emphasis on the free car from parents part. Really. I know people with brand new imports who show less appreciation for having a car at all then I do with my two-decade-old-pos. Not to mention, I also know more then one person who has even crashed their parent-given rides and gotten them fixed up or replaced for free. So my questions are these: 1. Was your first car free, paid for by yourself, or did your mommy buy it for ya? 2. What was your first car and its value? 3. Your views on parents giving their kids nice cars? This all came about after reading an article on Jalopnik.com about beaters.. Sort of related, interesting read. Click here.

I don't even have my first car. I know EXACTLY how you feel though. My parents are the same way..I'm saving up my own money.

I bought myself a 1996 sunfireGT for $1850. FUCK kids that get free cars

I got a VR commodore wagon for free it was worth about $2000, then my parents took it off me and made me get my own car, which was a $800 Volvo 244GL

I don't drive yet, but drivers training is like 400 here so since I'm 18 I'm having my uncle teach me and then I'm taking the test. I'm planning on buying my car by myself, any other way wouldn't be as satisfying even if it takes me 3 years. Although I can get a used car on a discount from my uncle because he works at a car dealer. But it would still cost me about 1200. But I plan on buying my car for myself. I don't care what it is as long as it runs and i have a car.

There is nothing wrong with getting discounts. its the fact people are getting cars worth 15k+ for free and smashing them and then not caring that their parents are paying for it all.

I don't even have a car yet. But my parents and I would go halfsies at LEAST on a car.

1. I bought it 2. 1993 Chevy Cavalier, KBB for $723, bought it for $650 3. Complicated question, I personally think its up to the parents, if they want to give their ungrateful kid a $70,000 car, be my guest. To be 100% perfectly honest, I would 9 time out of 10 choose a nice 80s/90s used car over a new car any day for the simple fact that their computer systems are more simple and easier and cheaper to fix should anything go wrong.

Bought it 1994 Ford Ranger. Bought for 3400, sold for 2000. Replaced tranny at 1200 bucks. I could care less, but if the kid gets a car bought, it should be a nice car but nothing powerful.

Nice how? Nice as in safe, reliable, etc. or nice as in a Mercedes or Lexus? Well I suppose most Mercedes are powerful, but w/e. + Tempo's are nice and certainly not powerful. lmfao x 10.

Wow... is some one jealous... Apperently as soon as you get a nice car you're ungrateful. The stick price for my ride was $28,000 brand new in 04. I got it last year when I was 15 for a birthday present. You guyz suck so bad at life.

You caught me. My cars make my life a hell of a lot more important than you. Come up with a real argument.

Holy Jesus Lord. No way. No wonder Honda has the best selling sedan title. For $28k you could actually buy a good car.

Yes. I am jealous. Which is why I have a problem when people are getting cars for free out there and they are less thankful and appreciative then I am for having something as fantastic as a '89 Tempo.

how's the paint doing since you've been taking care of it more ?
-- Posted by FTF at 12:05 am on Sep. 20, 2008
Worse, actually. The trunk and surrounding rear upward-facing surfaces have a bad case of herpes. Not the rust kind either, strange. But the rest of the car's paint is well, and I know for a fact the paint issues started before I got the car.

I didn't consider my 97 Dodge Neon a nice car. But I didn't have to pay for it. I think it was like $2000. It was my learner car. I could understand the parent like having a crappy old car and then being like here kid you can learn on it while I get the new car. But even then if my future kids did anything remotely close to what my brother has done to the truck he took over, they wouldn't be driving any more. But I will not buy my kids a brand new car, it will not work that way.

I started with a 99 2Dr Neon. Complete base model, no cd/cassette but low miles and pretty clean. I think it took me all of 6 months to smash that. Nice car though. Worth about 3500 at the time.

My dad got me a moped when I was 16, but I saved up the money for the rest of my bikes on my own. I don't mind if parents want to buy their kids a car, I just find it irritating when the kids badmouth other peoples cars and try to show off what mommy and daddy brought them. I'd rather have my £1200 bike than their £10,000 cars anyway - its much faster ;)

1) My parents bought it, but only because they had to take out a lone, and they didn't want me to, because they didn't want me to have to worry about credit, bank fees, having to make payments on time, and shit at such a young age. However, I do have to pay them back. So, I essentially, I bought it. 2) 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier. Got it for $3000. 3) It's not really a problem. The thing that pisses me off, though, is when they go somewhere and brag about their brand new $30,000 BMW, and they refer it as "their" car, when their parents bought it. Even worse, if they have no information on the history of the car. Like, if they don't even know what BMW stands for, then that's not a good thing. If you're going to brag about something, at least know the history behind it, or else you'll look just like another ignorant rich boy/girl.

Come to think of it, I'm actually proud of the people at my school. In the student parking lot, the newest car in it is a 1995 Corsica. Meaning either the kid bought it, or the parents aren't retarded morons.

yeah but your from the ghetto.

1. My parents bought it. I would never have been able to afford my own car, especially with the price of insurance over here. 2. £3500. 3. No, I think its fine. Most kids can't afford their own cars, especially if you just have a part time weekend job. Many of my friends were given nice cars by their parents for their 17th birthday, but they aren't ungrateful. If your parents have the money to buy you a new, reliable car then why not?

Because if you have a new, reliable first car then you won't learn anything and you'll end up being the kind of person that can't even change a tyre.
