So, I'm applying for the Fall 2009 semester at Loyola University in Chicago, and I need to submit a writing sample with it. I want to submit something that stands out, and I have the perfect piece in mind: a short essay on my disgust with the growing alcoholism of my peers. Now, in the essay, I very clearly condemn teenage drinking. It is well written (I received high marks on in my AP English class), and the right length. However, Loyola is a Jesuit University, and while my piece is against underage drinking, I'm not so sure it would be wise to bring a topic like that up. After all, it is college; the admissions officers are bound to know that all sorts of crazy partying goes on right under their noses. And, I'm worried it will make me sound stuck up or something. So, opinions? Should I go with the piece against teenage drinking or no? On a side note, I'm not forcing my opinions on you or criticizing those of you that do drink. All the alcohol I've consumed in my life could probably fill up 3/4 of a beer can, and I'm fine with that.

i don't know exactly what a "writing sample" is so i don't know exactly what the purpose of this is. but anyways, it isn't AP english. when writing my college essays (and again, i don't know if that's the same thing as you're doing) i constantly had to remind myself that i wasn't writing for an IB english or history grade, i was writing to show how i write

Go for it. They will probably know that you thought about it, and then come to the conclusion that you were confident enough to submit it. I would.

I would submit it. It's important to show you're passionate about things you believe in, and that you can write persuasively about it. Most schools are worried about binge drinking on campus, so the fact that you think it's an issue too would go over well. So go for it!
