I know that I shouldn't go to a school just for its name, but it still frustrates me that this school doesn't get the recognition that it deserves. I have a feeling that it will get its proper recognition in the next ten/twenty years or so, since with an insanely larger application pool for our generation, schools that used to be nameless have risen in both name recognition and academic quality--since there have to be more good schools to fit all of the extremely qualified applicants. Idk, what do you guys think? I'm just speculating.

No, it's not true? Or no, you have never heard of it?
-- Posted by YeahBoii at 4:22 pm on Oct. 3, 2008
Honestly never heard of it...
-- Posted by major at 4:23 pm on Oct. 3, 2008
it's a fairly well known school, at least in my area. you say you're interested in emory and the immediate reaction is "oh, atlanta"
-- Posted by dumb whore at 4:23 pm on Oct. 3, 2008
i've heard the name, and i assume that it's a good school because i met a lot of honors students that applied to it.

I've heard of it. It's in Atlanta, right? From what I've heard, it's a very well respected school. A lot of smaller schools aren't well known amongst the population, but are respected in academia. And unless you go to an Ivy League school, which school you go to isn't going to have much to do with what options you have when you get out; it's what you learned in that school that will determine where you go.

the first option.

I know about it. But it's also down the street from me, so I guess I don't really count. I know a ton of people who want to go there. Oh yeah, and my uncle is a Physics professor there. And about it-- To get in, you need pretty high test scores (at least upper 600s for Math and Verbal), a high GPA (over 3.75), a challenging high school course load.

yes, and didn't the guy in into the wild go there?

Whoa, I really disagree. So many schools are on the same level as the Ivies now, and some of those non-ivies have even bigger name recognition/respect (Georgetown, Stanford, Chicago, Swarthmore... blah blah blah). The whole "Ivies are the only amazing schools" thing is diminishing pretty rapidly. And most of the time, a school like Bowdoin or Amherst is ranked academically above, say, Cornell.

Jimmy Carter and the Dalai Lama.... thats how i know about the school.

I've heard of it. I think they sent me something in the mail once.

I've definitely heard of Emory. Its on the top 20 hardest to get into list, or at least it was last year. Small liberal arts college with an awesome reputation. I'm sure that it would be a good school to go to even if a bunch of people haven't heard of it.

I've heard the name but it doesn't really conjure anything.

It's a well known school actually. Don't let other's judgment discourage you, especially something this silly. I hope to go to med/grad school there.

I heard of it off "Into the Wild".

I've heard of it. I am actually applying there as a Transfer Student. It is an excellent school with an excellent reputation.

I completely agree with you. A school's academic reputation definitely matters--especially if applying to Graduate schools. Same thing for Emory..it is ranked higher than Auburn, UGA, etc..although it may not be that well known. My other transfer choice is the College of William and Mary and it is considered a "Public Ivy" and is considerably less-well known and actually cheaper than some schools.
