This might sound like a dumb question since I'm already in college, but I've never actually had to deal with this before. I have not yet taken any algebra courses in college - and I deeply regret this, because now I'm trying to cram in shit at the last minute. I'm in my second year at a community college, getting my generals/AA degree and I want to make sure I have everything before transferring. I will talk to my counselors, but I want to know RIGHT NOW (I'm trying to choose my classes for next semester currently). My question is, if Intermediate Algebra is a prerequisite to College Algebra, does that mean that I absolutely HAVE to take Intermediate Algebra? I can't just sign up for College Algebra and try my best? How does this work, guys? Thanks.

You have to have taken it or else you have to be get like an approval/okay type thing from a counselor.

I don't believe that there is anyway around it. I think you MUST take the pre-req. All of my classes that had pre-reqs you had to have them completed and passed before applying for the following course.

If it's a prereq, then it's necessary, and you can't move on without it.

You're right...except I just looked at the Course Description and realized I missed the small part that said "Must have MATH 0570 OR placement test at college level." I remember taking the placement test, I just have no idea what I scored for math. Probably not well enough to get into College Algebra, but I might be lucky! I guess I'll just have to check with a counselor to see if I'm able to get into Coll. Algebra without the Intermediate. I just looked at the requirements of the school that I'm transferring to, and I NEED that College Algebra 1110! Tigressa, do you think my best option would just be taking Int. Algebra spring semester then College Algebra summer semester next year (if I can't get into College Algebra)?

How the HELL is Intermediate Algebra a pre-req? I can understand in some cases... I mean, at my school, Intermediate Algebra is a pre-req for College Algebra ONLY if you didn't score high enough on the Math Placement Test. Honestly, if at all possible, I would skip Inter. Alg. and go directly into College Algebra. Some courses will go ahead and allow that!

All right, thank you so much! That's what I'm really hoping I can do. Having to take Intermediate Algebra spring semester basically ruins my entire schedule. The only time I can take it is at night, which is when I want to take my Chemistry class. Gah. I'm hoping so badly that I can take College Algebra! I have to talk to a counselor about it before the end of the week.
