Am I the only one who can pretty much always tell if it's a girl or a guy writing a given post without looking at their username or sex listing here on livewire?
-- Posted by blufindr at 1:31 am on Oct. 22, 2008
Pretty much, yeah. I'm not smart enough to tell T_T And lol, I just got this thingy when I tried to post a 2-sentence answer: Specific Reason: * As a certified LiveWire Intellectual you are indubitably capable of composing a more verbose post! Uh, I guess it's because I have so many male friends, I've basically forgotten how girls talk. Lol, but if I see a really badly typed/spelt/Myspace-worthy post, I automatically (usually correctly) assume it's a girl.

Yeh it depends on the content. But generally it's not hard to tell methinks.
-- Posted by Killtyronedead at 1:42 am on Oct. 22, 2008
Yeah. Girls are always bitching about guys and guys are always trolling.
-- Posted by medjai at 1:45 am on Oct. 22, 2008
I don't mean by subject matter, I mean by the way that they talk. The structure of their sentences, the syntax they use, how excited they are in posts, etc.
-- Posted by Killtyronedead at 1:46 am on Oct. 22, 2008
Oh. Hmm, I've never really been able to pick up on that. Maybe I'll try to see if I can do that.
-- Posted by medjai at 1:55 am on Oct. 22, 2008
Maybe it's weird that I'm so successful with it, or maybe I'm only successful with it in certain types of posts, so I assume I am good at it all around through confirmation bias. I really do think it's obvious most of the time though, I really believe that girls write in a different way than men do.
-- Posted by exceedinglyrare at 8:14 am on Oct. 22, 2008
Mm, it depends on the post. When it comes to grammar and syntax, that tends to lean more towards being an age difference than a difference in gender. It really more comes out in tone. Girls tend to be a bit more willing to listen to the other side, and can sometimes actually change their positions on things over time. Guys tend to have a bit more of an "I'm right; you're not" tone to their posts. That's not saying that girls are never arrogant or that guys are never open-minded, but those are the trends I've seen. BUT I don't usually care about gender when I'm responding to someone.
-- Posted by spartan09 at 5:40 pm on Oct. 22, 2008
It depends what forum I'm in. Intellectual? It's hard to tell. DTRM? Very easy.
Lol, but if I see a really badly typed/spelt/Myspace-worthy post, I automatically (usually correctly) assume it's a girl.
I disagree, for the most part, they're post whore preteens just trying to cram as many posts into their count as they possibly can so they can try to sell them to others. (Like me). I hate the morons that'll do anything just for a few points.

Well I happen to notice this: Most girls like to type in abbreviation myspace/aim-like Most guys like to use cuss words and the word fail.

No, you're absolutely correct. I find it to be extremely easy. I assumed most others did, as well. The only time I remember being surprized after I looked at the gender listing was with Shh, but then it turned out that he was really a girl.

Some slang words seem gender specific, such as PWNED (male) or LOLZ/HUGGLEZ (female). If no slang is used in a post, such as posts in the Intellectual Forum, I find it very difficult to distinguish gender.
-- Posted by paperskyx at 4:19 pm on Oct. 25, 2008
I can also do this, but I'm wrong 10% of the time. Sometimes when a girl posts something like "is a white or black girl better in sex?", then I would think it's a guy. But you can never really tell, and that's LiveWire for you.
-- Posted by Blackadder at 7:55 pm on Oct. 26, 2008
I dont think it is really possible without relying on gender stearotypes & cliches.... (use of reason= guy, use of empathy= girl) add to that: you have 50% chance of guessing correctly, you probably to have a reasonably low margin of error.

Should we conduct a wee experiment? Get one Int. Forum members who is male and one who is female, get them to post an anonymous post on a subject and we determine which one is male and which one is not? It will be harder because, assuming, a poster on the intellectual board would have a much learned style of writing than your regular LW poster. Who's up for that?

Err I already have a plan for this and Ima working on it, give me another day.

I suppose you could say we have a different way of speaking or writing. I don't think I've ever consciously known what whoever's gender was until I looked, but I've never been surprised either... or at least, not very often.

Even that's somewhat a matter of age difference. I think you'll find some of the more mature guys are willing to change their positions, as long as they're in an environment where this is not considered a sign of weakness. But yes, I suppose males do have a more natural inclination towards competition.

I definatley can. Just something about the grouping of the words is different, and the words themselves. Girls tend to use more words you don't really need to use such as like, so, anyways, etc.
-- Posted by Chiefette at 12:09 pm on Nov. 3, 2008
I have never noticed this. I will definetly be looking at this from now on.
-- Posted by Kriekey at 12:31 pm on Nov. 3, 2008
I can't do this at all, but I'm impressed by people who can. But then come to think of it, I've rarely been in a situation where I didn't know someone's gender anyway. One great example was when one member of an online community I was with joined as a girl and convinced us for several months he was female. Even to the extent of flirting with other guys (I say flirting because I have no idea how far it went in private). When it all came out that he was in fact male, quite a few men were..... curiously quiet.

thats such a great ability to have, to know whether the fuckwad on the other side of the globe is a girl or a boy. i wish i had that ability, i'm highly envious. am i a girl, or a boy? said bearsy but you ignored it. its a boy, i can tell.
-- Posted by tell me again at 5:49 pm on Nov. 5, 2008
I can always tell. But people think I'm a guy ... ^ | | Is that better?

I mostly agree with this, more than subject matter or general tone of the post. Girls have more casual sentences while guys have more rigid ones (if both are well-written). Badly-written posts have their own differences but it's harder to tell for me.
-- Posted by Heavenly Eve at 11:28 am on Nov. 7, 2008
well you have only a 50/50 chance guess its one or the other... and in general I can tell too... girls tend to be more... "annoying"

Oh, I definitely agree with this post. Even when I'm writing formally I still tend to ramble and digress, even if I am being highly grammatical.
