So many people I know do this: You try to have an intelligent argument about a issue that often gets brought up as a religious thing, like abortion. They say, well I'm pro-life. The only reason they say they are pro-life is because of God. Okay, you can believe what you want. But then you ask them if they'd ever have sex with their boyfriend in high school. They say sure. You tell them well God doesn't want you to do that either. They say, it doesn't matter what God says. ----- Basically, do you think if someone believes in something primarily because of God they should believe the the "God side" in the rest of their arguments?

No. The idea of a belief is something you follow to meet your needs, and not be pressured by.

Well that's silly then. but it's clearly pretty confusing for them, so they should get a break. admittedly, you're still right, they shouldn't use it an argument if they don't even know how they feel..

If God is an external and almighty force, then our needs, or rather wants, are irrelevant. God's commands are God's commands.

I have religion and I am pro-choice :\ I've never met a pro-life individual who could justify it to me.

how do you have an "intelligent argument"? I just don't think an argument can be intelligent...

well i love my religion so .... ! don't know what to tell u!
-- Posted by Narfled the Garthok at 2:53 pm on Oct. 22, 2008
Any argument with God is not an intelligent argument, you should know that. Thats like arguing "the sky is green because this imaginary ghost told me so". When in reality the sky is visibly blue.

it's so annoying. my friends are like "Oh yeah sure I believe in God, but in my own way" if they say they are Christians why don't they act like it? I do. I know what's against the morals of my religion, and I try to watch out from doing things that go against them.. Those are called hypocrites, and they annoy me...

If you believe that, okay. But what I was trying to make the point of is that in order to have a belief, you actually have to believe it. Trying to follow the bible word from word, unless you're programmed inately to act that way, is impossible without defying God's will of you as a person. There has to be variations on the faith, or Christianity would just be a set of mindless drones.

I don't believe in God or Christianity, but arguing from a hypothetical standpoint, I feel you are a hypocrite.

If everyone acted in perfect accordance to God's will, we would all act in the same way. And this would be good. Of course we can neither act perfectly or perfectly understand how we should act, but we should sincerely search for Biblical answers, and not abandon God's word because it doesn't fit in conveniently with the lifestyle we wish to lead. If you love me, you will obey what I command. John 14:15

Listen, my head's killing me, and it seems either you, or I, or both, are unwilling to accept the other's opinions at this current time, so this is where it ends. I don't think you quite understood what I was saying, though.

According to the Bible which all Christians follow (if you don't then you can hardly consider yourself a true Christian) all sins are held to same level. And its not a baby. Its an unborn baby. There's a big difference.

I don't understand your reasoning. I've always actually been confused by religious sects. There was clearly an intial religious code at some point in time for all religious. A group says "Hey, we don't agree with this stuff, so we are going to take the holy book and highlight these areas and rephrase these areas, and we are going to call ourselves baptists!" or whatever. How can a person even justify this among their followers? A religion is a religion, and God says that we should all obey his law to a T and if we don't we "repent" or whatever (which is actually an example of religious doctrine being rephrased because people grew upset over being damned). If somebody is able to conciously say "I don't like God's law, so I'm going to make a new religious sect to my specific wants but still whole-heartedly believe in God" how fucking crazy is that person?

Up until the last line of your conversation, it doesn't quite work like that. There's no reason a person can't believe that God is against abortion but not against extramarital sex. Granted, it takes a bit of stretching for the latter, but that doesn't make them hypocritical at all. It only makes them people who believe that God values life but doesn't care when you have sex and with whom.
