-- Posted by berrycuda at 6:11 am on Oct. 23, 2008 We have a wireless router and usually have no problems but the pc that is in an upstairs bedroom  has loads of problems connecting for some reason. It is a couple years old and doesn't have wireless built in and has to be plugged into the USB port. Sometimes it will receive a signal and work for awhile and then go off other times it receives a signal from another wireless router and pick that one up instead. it never seems to work properly or for any length of time without problems. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is or how to fix it? -- Posted by marshmellowman at 6:15 am on Oct. 23, 2008 If it's far from your router (in distance) then the connection might just be really poor, a USB adapter with a better antenna or higher gain/power might perform better. If you are serious about it you might want to look into investing in a new USB adapter. Also turn off connecting to other networks automatically and it won't try and switch to the ones around you if it sees they have a better connection (it tries to do that automatically). Also if the USB adapter has an extension lead, you might want to try connecting that and moving the adapter further away from the computer and closer in the direction of the router to try and avoid any interference the PC might cause. You might also try moving the router physically closer to the PC, if that can be done (it might not if your modem is also there and there isn't much room for the telephone or cable line). Some routers have the option of turning the power (in decibels, dB) up too, which will increase range on the device so it might not lose the connection as much. -- Posted by espresso8097 at 6:15 am on Oct. 23, 2008 There is an easy way to solve wireless or lack thereof woes.  Replace it.  For about $25 (USD) one can get a 54 or even 108mbps 802.11g router. -- Posted by Napster the Hacker at 6:16 am on Oct. 23, 2008 move the router close to the PC or move the PC close to the router.you might be able to buy a wireless card for that PC.It will work better than the usb, im using a wireless too i had to get a card for that though. -- Posted by berrycuda at 5:41 am on Nov. 8, 2008 Hmmm it's all really weird sometimes more than not when someone goes on the pc thats furthest away it knocks the whole system out and can't get the net for hours at times.
