some of my symptoms:
i cry a lot, often i dont even know exactly why
i dont like to do things i used to love
i never want to go anywhere with anyone (hang out with friends and stuff)
i havent been able to talk to anybody about this..

is this just a phase or is it depression?

If it's been going on for more than two weeks, it might be depression. Why don't you have a talk with a doctor about it? They can give you a test

the hardest part is just telling someone. can you write it down and show it to your mom or dad? that might be easier than coming right out and saying it

Honestly talk to a doctor. I have problems telling people things too, when they ask you why youve made an appointment, say you think youre depressed. theyll get you to open up enough to judge whether youre depressed or not and give you advice and show you the steps to take from there on. In the mean time, try to find someone to talk to. I know hanging out with people seems an effort, but if you just try a little bit and you do, the difference to being alone will be a step already.

I think depression is defined by how severely depressed you are.  That is, everyone in the world is depressed to some degree, but psycologists have drawn a line in the sand and said that anyone who exhibts symptoms profound enough is classed as depressed.

The real issue is that you're feeling down all the time.  I hope you can find someone to talk to about this... there's no harm in talking to a counsellor.  They're there to just talk to in times of need.  If you have any close enough friends to talk to that could help too.

can't exactly make a diagnosis over the internet.

you may have depression if it's continued for over two weeks. but it could also be other things. a lot of teens feel depressed, but most of them don't have depression. i'd suggest seeing a counselor to start with.
