I'm having trouble understanding "um zu" as in like.. how to use it correctly and what it means exactly.

um zu means "in order to" for example: "ich gehe nach Osterreich, um Ski zu fahren." - I go to Austria in order to ski

ich muss mein hausaufgaben machen um gute noten zu bekommen
there should also be a comma after the "machen" sorry to be pedantic.

"um zu" doesn't really mean much on it's own; you'd need the infinitive of after "zu". "Zu" would mean "to", and "um" is like "in order to". Like: Ich habe deinen Apfel genommen, um eine Torte zu backen. I took your apple in order to bake a pie.
