My friend Adriana and I were talking one day at a Denny's about tithing, and we came to the conclusion that we find it easier to give a waiter or waitress 15-20% of what we pay out for their services than it is to give God 10% of what we earn. Sit and think on that for a moment now. I mean, it's not like he did anything that amazing right, he just created us, this waiter/waitress here is about to give me some delicious food that will be gone in a matter of 10 minutes. I mean really think about it. You go out to say Red Lobster where you can easily drop about $50.00. Now it the waiter is good, we give him anywhere from $7.00-$10.00 easy. Now say we keep those $50 dollars and give $5.00 to the church or to a charity in God's name, or any way you want to give. Why is that more difficult than giving that waiter or waitress what we feel they deserve? I just think it a bit crazy. I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on this though.

I agree. Except be careful what you donate to...Throwing money at a church might not be the best bet. So I want to find a good ministry that will use the money to its full potential.

I wasn't aware that it was possible to tip God.

So stop going to Dennys and give your money to the church. Or help out your fellow human being who is only making $3 an hour and give them a tip so they can support their lives and families...but I suppose helping out fellow humans isnt what god wants us to do.

What? I was referring to the thought process of some Christians that they rather give someone else 15 or 20% and complain about giving God 10%. I was saying that I can't give to God because I go to Denny's...

I think it tends to be that we like to see an immediate benefit from our money. When it comes to tipping a waiter or waitress, we've seen an immediate benefit: they provided us decent service and food, so we have no problem giving them money in thanks. When it comes to tithing, the benefits aren't quite so tangible or immediate. You don't give 10% of your income to the church and then get a new CD or better coffee in the fellowship hall (well...they can't get better coffee unless they can afford it, so you see how that goes); the idea is that it's not to benefit you at all, not even to give you the warm fuzzy feeling you get from donating to charity. It's to give back to God what is God's, and that's a hard concept for people to swallow, particularly in Western culture...we worked for it, so it's our money, and all that.

I would rather tip a waiter in the sense that he isnt holding salvation hostage from me until i pay him, like a church

I'm not sure what you are referring to? Not all churches are so forceful with their want of money. Mine isn't at least. The only one who can hold salvation from you is God. And he's not going to deny you Heaven just because you don't pay him. lol
