How at first, everybody went to the same underworld, but then Plato said that if you're good, you get a reward, but if you're bad, you get squat. It's not like I read the book and suddenly gained morality or my morals changed. I got told 1) no-one can know if they're going to heaven (to assume so is presumption, a sin, to assume you won't is despair, also a sin). 2) We (mankind) are bound by the sacraments (and in this case most importantly baptism, confession and last rites). 3) God is not bound by the sacraments, and is more merciful than any of us can probably seem. How that actually effects things is not known, but it makes it acceptable to hope that a lot more than just baptised people dying in a state of grace might make it.
