I love that two girls answered, and no guys. A soft cup, though, is for less contact sports. Like... if you run marathons. How uncomfortable would it be if you had to run 26.2 miles with a piece of plastic between your legs. A soft cup is just for holding your junk in place. Whereas a hard cup would have the obvious advantage of being able to protect your jewels.
