i feel like i don't fit in. i am never comfortable at parties. i can never take part in a conversation. it's not that i don't have friends-- i have a lot, but i don't really spend time with them. on the weekend, i don't make plans, i just sit at home doing nothing. i feel like I'm loosing all of my friends. the only place that i feel comfortable is summer camp, and thats only a few weeks out of a year. it's not that i don't want to have friends, i just can't put myself out there. is there a way that i can become more social, and actually do stuff with my life?

thats what i do. and i get made fun of. people think i'm really easy to make fun of, i don't know why. they always say "oh, its okay to make fun of her, she takes it so well, it doesn't matter." but i really do care. it makes me really sad when it happens.

You're already on the right track to becoming more social and comfortable in situations. The fact that you already have a lot of friends means there's nothing really wrong with anything you're doing. It seems to me as if your main problem is just your self-consciousness. Believe it or not, but there are very few people who are naturally comfortable in social situations from the beginning. Those who are get their ease from practice. That's right, you're not the only one it doesn't come naturally to! The people you see around you, chatting away without a care in the world, have most likely been through exactly what you're feeling. But they got over it, because someone let them in on a little secret - if you fake confidence and ease long enough, eventually it'll begin to come naturally.

Don't hold yourself back. Put your personality out there. Be friendly and open to all possibilities of new people and friendships. If you can't think of anything to say, ask questions about the other person, or compliment them. If it still seems really awkward, it could be that you two just don't have a connection, and aren't meant to be friends. Move on to the next person. To use a cliché, there are more fish in the sea!

As for your current friends, it's good that you can notice that you're beginning to lose them. But hold tight! You still haven't completely broken off contact from them, and you still have a chance to save your friendships. Don't be afraid to be make the first move by texting them and asking if they want to have lunch or come over. Write them a message on Facebook saying you haven't met up in a while, and you'd like to see them soon. Don't let them slip away just yet! The effort has to come from you, and although it may seem hard to make the first move, your friends will thank you for it.
