Are theories composed of verified facts? Or are they fact less?

-- Posted by Marith at 9:26 pm on Nov. 9, 2008

They can have some facts, but they most likely have contridictory facts also, pros and cons bro

Your poll fails :/

Theories are idea that can later be formed into facts. Like hypothesis.

they have some facts to back it up usually

Nothing's ever certain. But we have to the best we can with what we have.

alot of theories are based on facts, wether or not the theory is a fact... that's a different story

-- Posted by Special Agent Orange at 9:29 pm on Nov. 9, 2008

a theory is an idea until proven otherwise.

-- Posted by bornonmars75 at 9:31 pm on Nov. 9, 2008

no because they are theories...there is no fact behind it

They generally are based on facts, and then there's some abstract concepts about how exactly those facts fit together, I guess.  It really depends on what sort of theory you're talking about.  One like evolution has quite a few facts, and the speculation makes a lot of sense.  That being said there are some theories that are complete, or almost complete speculation, probably mostly astrophysics or theoretical physics-type theories.

I really should have done this poll segmented by nation.

America's public education system is a massive joke.

Theories have been backed up by experimentation so they are at least composed of the facts of observation.  If any given theory itself states a fact about the natural world that is confirmed via more testing of said theory.

Whats the point of this question anyway?

Yankee fan called my assertion that theories are composed of a wide body of facts "ridiculous"

your response fails... You don't have a clear understanding of what a scientific [or any other type, really] theory is.

Theories are comprised of facts and propose a conclusive fact [ie. a, b, c, therefore Z]

they are ideas and are just ideas but they can be based on some fact
