To my mortification, I was one of two seniors on my floor in the dorms this semester. All 28 others are freshman and sophomores. There are no juniors.

Usually, the freshmen are the majority of the people on campus because they're guaranteed a room for sure. After first year, most people get their own place :/

I plan on living in my dorm 'til I graduate, and then getting my own place, during grad school. Most of the people in my dorms are juniors, seniors, and grad students.

that's definitely not common here. it's not even common for sophomores to live on campus.

The dorms are cheap. Apartments are not. Most students just simply cannot afford an apartment, at 1100 a month, for a year lease.

Where my school is, an apartment is MUCH cheaper than the Dorms. It is very rare for a senior to live in the dorms here.

Apartments range from 750 to 1100 a month. The dorms range, with a kitchenette, washer/dryer, etc...from 375 to 435. Take your pick at which is cheaper.
