Okay, so by next month my boyfriend and I will have been dating a year. We're seniors in high school, and it's time to apply to colleges. I understand that we're young, but I want to follow him where he goes to school. He's MUCH smarter than I, so obviously not the same school, but same area... I wanted to go to school in Wisconsin or Michigan to study zoology, and he wants to go to New York to study design. So it would be a major switch for me area-wise, and it would be difficult to find a good school in the major I'm pursuing. Is it a bad choice to follow him? Because we haven't been dating long, but I still want to continue our relationship without it going crazy long-distance. What do you think?

Personally, I don't think you should follow him. You know what you want to do, and around where you want to go, and because you're dating you shouldn't change that. I mean, you could continue the relationship which would be tough, but ehh, I don't know.

you're (saradotcom) on to something here...why should you have to switch your life to fit his plans when the relationship is barely developing...not to say he's not a major part of your life if that's the way it actually is but if it does last regardless of distance, then that's something worth keeping...don't move on just yet.

It really depends on how much you care about him and how much you think he cares about you. Yeah, it might seem obvious, but I think the question is whether you are committed to each other enough to give up those opportunities. I encourage you to keep talking to him about it directly, because he probably has some opinions that will help you decide. Talk to your parents as well. It's a big decision, so you'll benefit from the help you can get. Anything can change. Your feelings toward him can change or his feelings toward you can change, you know that. But your desires can change as well! Maybe you'll really love it there, maybe you'll realize you are getting more out of that situation than you would if you had gone elsewhere, maybe you'll hate it if you don't go with him. You never know. you might end up choosing based on simply whether he is more important than the perfect career. Neither option is an overwhelmingly better one.
