So if I go to Amsterdam and smoke weed I won't get arrested when I come back to the US?

Lol, no you will NOT. But don't plan on taking any drug tests for work or such in a hurry when you get back.

Why else do people go? And no, the US has no authority over there. If its legal there, you cannot get into trouble if you come back to the US. Unless you bring some back, then you broke US law, and you will get into trouble.

True. Although the Netherlands is constantly under pressure from the United States (through the UN) to incriminate drug use, including the US threatening certain economic sanctions to countries that do not "control the internal trading of narcotics". Ironically one of the things that the US and their "enemies" in the Middle East have in common is backward socially authoritarian policies, regarding drug use but also many other issues. And really, Amsterdam ain't the greatest place on Earth to go for a brilliant drugs experience. Try South-East Asia, but I suppose that's if you're a backpacker.

Well, if you want to get technical, you can. THC in your blood = possession. Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't something to be worried about but hey, you asked.
THC is a controlled substance in America but it's schedule III so if you're found to have THC in your blood the government can't do shit about it. This is not the same as possession.
Make sure to walk into almost any corner store and pick up a nice refrigerated eight of shrooms while you'll there as well. If there long enough, maybe even twice. I don't recommend multiple days for tolerance sake but you can do what yo want. Someone told me they cracked down on this or something recently so perhaps this may not be an option. It's been two years now since I've been.
Shrooms will be illegal within a year or two, the bill banning them is on a slow but determined way through parliament.

You can be charged with possession. No body said it was the same.
