Can't we all just get along?

Catherine Vogt, 14, is an Illinois 8th grader, the daughter of a liberal mom and a conservative dad. She wanted to conduct an experiment in political tolerance and diversity of opinion at her school in the liberal suburb of Oak Park.

She noticed that fellow students at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama for president. His campaign kept preaching "inclusion," and she decided to see how included she could be.

So just before the election, Catherine consulted with her history teacher, then bravely wore a unique T-shirt to school and recorded the comments of teachers and students in her journal. The T-shirt bore the simple yet quite subversive words drawn with a red marker:

"McCain Girl."

"I was just really curious how they'd react to something that different, because a lot of people at my school wore Obama shirts and they are big Obama supporters," Catherine told us. "I just really wanted to see what their reaction would be."

Immediately, Catherine learned she was stupid for wearing a shirt with Republican John McCain's name. Not merely stupid. Very stupid.

"People were upset. But they started saying things, calling me very stupid, telling me my shirt was stupid and I shouldn't be wearing it," Catherine said.

Then it got worse.

Maybe not, until you wear an Obama shirt.

Tolerance often fails by those claiming to be the "most tolerant"

-- Posted by exceedinglyrare at 9:53 am on Nov. 14, 2008

People aren't tolerant of others' political opinions; I've had friends on Facebook tell me I'm an idiot because I voted for Obama.

It's just a universal truth about humanity, not something that's true only about one political party and not others. And also on the hypocrisy line that I'm sure will follow. Human beings are hypocrites, universally.

Most often, it would seem...

And congrats on the "Blue Name".

all i can tell them now... is: dont blame me. i voted mccain.

Thanks! I am still in the portion of it all.

that is seriously fucked up

I proclaim my republican vote with pride...

-- Posted by PrideAndJoy at 10:51 am on Nov. 14, 2008

Yeah, that is fucked. However, they are in MIDDLE SCHOOL. I am sure the same happens if I were to wear an Obama shirt in Southern Mississippi. This topic is completely pointless because the exact reverse can be said about Conservatives.

I fail to understand your point, unless it is only to further defame Democrats by using your 'selective vision'.

Seriously, how long are you going to be bitter about the election? John McCain isn't...      so why are you?

-- Posted by cropduster at 10:58 am on Nov. 14, 2008

What I love about this is that it shows the typical political/social view of 'you don't agree with my views that means your stupid'.

I notice more than a few people on here with a similar attitude, myself included.

-- Posted by whoisabs at 11:01 am on Nov. 14, 2008

I'm surprised she didn't get buried in 'racist' for wearing the mccain shirt.

-- Posted by PrideAndJoy at 11:02 am on Nov. 14, 2008

I'm surprised you neo-cons didn't kill yourselves after the anti-Christ was elected.

I'm a little disappointed, actually.

Keep in mind these are probably largely 14 year old girls, a demographic where cliques and bitchiness hold a lot of sway.

A news-worthy item might have been a case-controlled double-blind test involving pyschologically analysing 2 groups (Obama voters and McCain voters) that showed there was a statistically significant difference between their scores in a tolerance test.

I don't doubt this is pretty prevelant in America, but to suggest this article is actually interesting is pointless mud-slinging we could only expect from before the election.

-- Posted by draakprinses at 5:57 pm on Nov. 14, 2008

You get that from all sides. Hell, the College Republicans (a club on my campus) were downright cruel to people who didn't agree with them. It got as far as vandalization, and campus security and a few county sheriffs had to get involved.

I doubt you know the difference between a neo-con and a neo-lib. And, btw, I'm neither.

She sounds like someone from the College Republicans on my campus. And that's not a compliment, either.

This, too. These kids likely would've done something similar if she wore the wrong color Hannah Montana shirt.

LOL. We're talking about the level of intolerance in a middle school?

Holy shit these threads suck eggs.

"Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars."

Yes, FA, conservatives (and racists) can also react negatively to an election. It's not just the 'liberal black faggots' that respond poorly.

Where do you suppose they learned that intolerance?

-- Posted by osmoticdespair at 5:40 am on Nov. 16, 2008

Yes every side does this. No that doesn't justify it when either side does it.

What is the deal with the whole "they're doing it" excuse? Does that mean since some murderers go unpunished if someone on "my side" murders someone its all cool?

-- Posted by Wilder at 2:20 pm on Nov. 16, 2008

Out of curiosity, what is the intended purpose of this thread, FA?

Yes every side does this.

They do?! Because from what I keep hearing, Democrats are little angels, and Republicans are a bunch of slobbering racists who smear innocent liberals every chance they can get.

Hell, it's commonly accepted knowledge, even here in Australia, that Republicans tend to 'fight dirty' during campaigning, while Democrats are the golden hearted victims who seek only to promote tolerance and peace, and would never put a foot wrong.

I think it's obvious. To demonstrate that contrary to popular perception, Democrats their ilk are just as intolerant of dissident viewpoints as those big bad mean Republicans are.

That's not news to me. The vast majority of censorship I have experienced on internet forums has been at the hands of liberals and left wingers. Ironically, one of the main culprits had the quote:
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." in his signature.

That's what you get for hanging about on Sci-Forums.
You should hang out on conservative blogs, then you'd get the opposite side.

Sci-forums is supposed to be politically neutral. After all, it's a science forum, not Democrats Underground.

But I frequent more than just Sciforums, and on every forum I've went to the same old tired stereotypes keep popping up.

Fucking liberals, parading about as if their shit don't stink!

-- Posted by osmoticdespair at 2:54 pm on Nov. 16, 2008

Again, conservative blogs avoid such personalities (except the occasional outnumbered troll). The reason you see it more with democrats is because they're in the internet majority, and because they tend to be the more "socially" oriented than conservatives.
