Either choose an option off of the list or state another civic value that you think is very important when it comes to being an American. You don't have to be American to vote or participate; just base your answer off of your observations. & Yes, this is positive values only, I'm writing an essay about it and I'm curious about your views. Back up your choice if you feel like doing so.

I believe respect should be the number one issue. Respect is the basis for understanding and learning. If you keep in mind that people are different from you, and that others may know more than you, or whatever the case is, you're going to be a better person. At least, I feel like being respectful should be something that is important to all Americans. It's common to see people tearing down people of other beliefs, especially for religious beliefs and sexual orientation. There needs to be a certain level of respect and understand for all people. This does not mean that we should not discuss our opinions and decide what we believe should be best- we can even be upset that other's believe that, and use responsible and respectful means to voice our opinions. It means that flaming and stereotyping people is irresponsible.

Work ethic is most important to me. There are far too many people on welfare who are perfectly capable of working and having our tax money taken out for stupid drug users is rediculous and about as unamerican as I can think of.

I think it is responsibility. Being responsible will hold us to fixing our problems and improving all areas of life, something we should be obligated to do.
