Every now and then someone thinks that it would be more useful to allow us to talk to those who are suicidal, that there posts shouldnt be removed. In some ways, I agree. However, any of us who have been on LW for even just a couple months have probably heard the explanation "Because if anything where to happen, LW would be liable". Some people take that for what it is. Other times Ive heard people question it, or ask why that really matters, or make comments about "its not like anything would ever come back to LW". Well, recently a 19 year old did actually commit suicide after being egged on by people online. He also broadcasted it over his webcam. Im sure many people have already heard about this, since its gotten to a big deal (even though it happened really recently) so Im not going to go into it much. I just want to point this out as an example, and show those who question LWs policy on the subject. While most of us do have good interests at heart, whose to say that this couldnt have easily been LW. We've all seen the posts, we've seen members ridicule others and poke fun at posts about cutting, suicide, drug abuse, etc. Hell, nearly all of us have been on one end or the other - if not both ends of it. at different times. This just got me thinking about how important LWs policies are, and how the mods really need to work to enforce these rules, and enforce them quickly. I think LW as a whole should really take a look at this situation, and hopefully we all can take something from it, whether its a better understanding of the reasoning behind LWs policies, a new urge to reports abusive posts, and for the mods an increased desire to equally, quickly, and effectively work as a team to make sure something like this never happens here. And if you ever make a suicide topic and they get deleted, it just makes you feel even more left out. Wait, I'm sorry, do they ever get deleted?
