well being an intellectual here means pretty much nothing.. so i was wondering.. how many of you are actually smart people in real life?
-- Posted by spartan09 at 5:41 am on Nov. 24, 2008
I consider myself to be smart in "real life". I got a 31 on my ACT and I'm gonna be an engineer when I get in college next year.

Every weekend I spend a far too generous portion of my wage on alcohol and drunken dancing at an Irish pub in the faint hope of picking up a female that is off my own standards, this materialises every 1 in 3 weeks, so I would say no.

I would think it means something majority of time. Most intellectuals I know are good at something. But we all can't be intellectuals and all be extremely knowlegable in the same subjects. Which is why we find nothing in common with other intellectuals besides maybe basics like the potential to have good grammar, large vocab and all intellectuals I think figure out problems the same. But again we all can't be good at every topic as the next intellectual so it is really pointless.

Its very intreging that the average intellectual on here has no common sense.
-- Posted by exceedinglyrare at 8:03 am on Nov. 24, 2008
Everyone defines "smart" differently; how are you defining it? Also, considering the different types of intelligences, this isn't really a question that can be answered objectively on most levels.

I dropped out of high school at 15, haven't read regularly since my early teens, and show no signs of changing. At this rate I'll be mopping floors and stacking shelves for the rest of my life. I think deep down there's a smart, curious, perceptive kid, but that intellect is filtered through four years of apathy and self loathing, and by the time it reaches the light of day it is a half-hearted trickle soon lost in the raging river of vitriol. So no, I do not consider myself an intellectual.

I used to be pretty smart but I think im losing it. All this is is talking with rhetoric.
-- Posted by allsmiles at 1:29 am on Nov. 26, 2008
How are you defining smart? My qualifications would suggest that I am of average to lower intelligence, yet I believe that I have a wide range of skills eith more than a couple of areas I would be deemed an expert on.

standardized tests don't necessarily reflect a person's general intelligence also i wouldn't consider myself an intellectual considering that i regularly spend time on livewire

People tend to think I am. I have won a national honor for my writing as well as a couple of smaller awards, and I get fairly good grades, I'd get better if I was more organized.
-- Posted by whoami111 at 10:00 am on Nov. 28, 2008
Well, some people who knows me well thinks I am at least on the more intelligent side and some don't. However, one psychiatrist believed my intelligence might be at a genius level.

I was pretty smart in high school, but I've fallen into dumb college things lately. I want to clean up my act for next semester though.

i pretty much waste my time on livewire. hmmmm am i an intellectual? well the definition of intelligence is vague.
-- Posted by sakurag at 2:47 pm on Dec. 2, 2008
I'm not super smart, but I'm moreso than a lot of people I know. But then again, I work with a lot of people who are leaps and bounds above me. But yeah, I think I'm smarter than a lot of people here. Most people are text book smart.
-- Posted by medjai at 3:07 pm on Dec. 2, 2008
I don't understand how you can be intelligent and not be 'textbook smart' barring a life in the hood or some shit.
-- Posted by medjai at 3:09 pm on Dec. 2, 2008
In my opinion kids that are just "textbook smart" aren't smart at all, they're just mediocre kids with no social skills who compensate through obsessive study and focus on fringe things. Naturally, since the other mediocre kids don't focus on this stuff, and they uniquely know shit, the other mediocre kids think the nerd is 'intelligent' on the grounds of him being knowledgeable in things 'associated' with intelligence. That is my definition of a nerd, all those kids who sat in the hallway between class reading. But I digress, I am an asshole.

I've been in honors english classes since 5th grade (i'm a high school junior now) and have been tutored by my older brother since youth, and he got a 36 on his ACT and is going into Software Engineering. Soo yeah.

"Smart-ness" is a relative measure. What are we comparing our alleged smart-ness to? Furthermore, intelligence does not equate to being smart. I'd venture that most people here are smart compared to someone like Cutemira. I'd say most of us are idiots compared to Hawking. What is the criteria?

I'm a completely useless part of "real life".

I got a 33 on the act and a 2050 on the sat (800 math, 660 critical reading, 590 writing). I took both tests once and did not study for either.
