My brother will be 18 in just three months. And over the past almost 18 years, he's wasted so much food that it's pure insanity. You'd think a 17 year old would know how to serve himself but he's apparently as stupid and childish as he was when he was 7. He just dipped out an entire plateful of food...and took, literally, maybe three or four bites. The rest, the whole entire plate, will get thrown out, mashed potatoes, noodles, turkey, and all. He didn't even touch the turkey.

When my Gram was raising her kids, she made them eat everything they put on their plate even if it meant forcing them to eat it for breakfast the next day. They didn't have a lot of money and she felt they were too old to be tossing out plate after plate of food just because they got greedy and took too much. My parents make excuses for my brother though and never yell at him. Then again, my parents are better off.

But do you think that justifies allowing children to throw out, literally, entire plates of food just because they were being stupid/greedy/foolish? Or does one's financial status have nothing to do with whether you actually eat your food or throw it out? Do you feel it's merely a matter of money or instead a matter of not being wasteful?

I think that throwing out a lot of food, regardless of financial standing, is wasteful. I have a friend with whom I eat lunch, and he throws out most of the food he gets in the lunch line. I don't know why he gets it in the first place, but it annoys me so much.

The bottom line is, someone else would have eaten that food later. Even if he could buy more. Why does he need to feel so lavish, that he can take food and not eat it?
