Well I just turned 18 and am looking to get a credit card so I can purchase parts to build my own computer which will be around $700. I have been on sites that compare rates and so far most of the ones with lower interest rates without an annual fee require good credit. The ones for those with no credit or bad credit of course have a higher APR. My question is will I most likely be able to get any of the ones for people with bad credit and what will be the limit for it? I have enough money in the bank to pay for the PC, but would like to start building my credit up, so would it build up my credit more to get one with a reg. APR and pay it off in 6 months or get one with a 0% APR for the first year and pay it off before the year is up? And my final ? is does it damage your credit to cancel cards after your 0 % APR period runs out and get a different card and do they still build credit at 0% APR?

Don't get a credit card.

Try getting a credit card from the bank that you have account at. You can typically get a better rate/limit or even apply for a student card (which will give you a decent rate as well). I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference which card you get, but getting one with 0 APR as opposed to ANY APR seems like a better choice. Why pay the interest rate if you don't have to, right? It doesn't necessarily damage you credit to cancel a card, but the more credit you have the better it looks (hence why it is not recommended to cancel cards with no balance). You may be better off keeping the card after the 0% APR time is up, but then applying for a new card alongside that (perhaps keeping the first for only emergencies?). Running your credit score often can effect your credit (thus, applying for many credit cards very often can bring it down a tad), but in your case it doesn't sound very bad at all. It sounds like a decent plan to me.
