...has just come back from the vets and he's got cataracts and he's going to go blind

Has this happened to anyone else's pet before? How serious are cataracts?

My dog had cataracts, then got glaucoma, he eye was going to explode from the pressure if we didn't remove it. So we had her eye removed, 3 years later her other eye got the same way, we couldn't afford to remove her other eye, and it isn't a good idea to have an eyeless dog, so we had to put her down last month.

Do they have surgery for that like they do for humans?
Poor doggie.

That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. Get a second dog to guide your dog that happens to be going blind.

To OP: This hasn't happen to my puppy, thank god. (He's only 5 months old.)
Also, there is a surgery to fix cataracts, if you so decide to fix his eye sight.

My dog is starting to get cataracts. She is a 10 year old lab.  Cataracts happen with most animals, and come with age. You can help treat them with special medications.

Cara, how old is your doggie and what kind is it?

He's 14 and he's a Jack Russell, so he's quite old anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My 15 and a half year old terrier mix, Lucy, had cataracts real bad.

That was here around the time we put her down. :(  She was a good ol' girl. You can see how cloudy her eyes are.

That really sucks, but dogs are really good with their senses, and now your dog will be even better with the rest of his/her senses once her vision goes. I'm sorry to hear that though :[
