I think it's horrible. I mean it's for everything they offer but I honestly don't think it should cover abortion along with birth control and condoms. If a girl is going to have something that serious done at a young age I think her parents should know about it.

I have a son and I'm pregnant right now. I'm also only 19. I've been there and still believe that the parents should know if a child is going to do something that dangerous to their body. And I was in foster care for the last six years of my "childhood". So I've been there, done that, and took responsibility.

I'm not saying your wrong , but i live in Indiana and i haven't heard of that, I'm sure it would have made the news paper, what are your sources for this?

It was on the news here. Fox 28. I'm trying to find it but so far all I see are the city budget cuts and the serial rapist information.

ok i did find something about it , its not the state of indiana but rather a few participating Planned parenthood locations are offering the opportunity for people to buy gift certificates. They are considering allowing them to be used towards an abortion but their main goal was to get people to go on the pill, and use other forms of protection. i called 3 of them (2 in my county) and one down state and they don't know anything of the program. (i have a buddy who works for them so he was able to provide me most of the info) i haven't been able to find an official statement on their website though

I don't know I'm in Ohio and it said an Indiana Planned Parenthood was participating. But yeah you're right there are more than those just in Indiana. I think the one they were talking about was just the closest one to us.

ill give my buddy another call he was at the Richmond one not to long ago, i think thats like 5 miles from Ohio, Edit: this really has me interested, because it gives people a reason to go there, the way i see it , people are more likely to go on BC and be more careful when its free to them.

I don't agree with it. I think if a girl is going to do something like that, they need to pay for it. If they can get it free it will quickly become birth control.

but its not free, its a gift certificate, just like your aunt gets you for xmas instead of buying that ugly ass sweater that is 3 sizes to big. but replace the sweater with a control prescription for a few months or any one of their other services the offer. Edit: got a price list of a few of the services offered from planned parenthood : abortion pill cost of services offered - abortion=Costs about $350-$900
- abortion pill (RU-486 type)Costs about $350-$650
- BC pill=Cost about $15-$50 each month
- BC patch=Costs about $15-$50 a month
- BC shot=Costs $35-$75 per injection, plus any exam fees
- Cervical cap=Costs about $60-$75
- morning after oops pill=Costs vary from $10 to $70
i dont know anyone who would get a $350+ dollar gift certificate to planned parenthood, so i think that its intended to be for Birth Control, or defraying the cost for birth control

And when they get the money it would be too late for the abortion and if someone didn't get the certificate more than likely it would be welfare insurance paying for it anyways. Which would you rather have? A relative or close friend buying the certificate for them or your taxes? Get off your "everyone has to pay for everything" kick. Sometimes people need help and without it there would be alot more sick, dead, and dying people out there. Like me being on Welfare insurance for 11 months during my pregnancy/recovery because I'm not married. How else was I going to get insurance on a $1,000 a month salary with a child on the way? Plus you know what? I did pay for my birth control and it didn't work. How many other teens out there do you think might have just had the same situation I did? I mean I'm pregnant again after being on the pill. Thank G-d it wasn't the pill that causes you to miscarry because I took it for almost three months while I was pregnant. The first time I was on birth control I was in foster care and the agency paid for me to recieve the shot. It worked all of six months (I got more than one shot) before I was pregnant. My point is basically, shit happens. People who use condoms %100 of the time combined with birth control still get pregnant. Nothing's %100 effective and for those people thank G-d there's free medical insurance and services for them. Without a plan a child being thrown on you in 9 months or less is a bit to take in without having to worry about how you're going to pay for the unexpected suprise. Believe me it's happened twice because I can't afford something like an IUD or Mirena. How about when you get laid off and have to live off of unemployment, don't get the unemployment. It's too much help. Or godforbid you get pregnant with no insurance don't got get insurance from the Department of Human Resources because you're Soooooo much better than the rest of us with your life all figured out.

gift certificates?
-- Posted by islandgirl at 3:19 pm on Dec. 4, 2008
OK this is the biggest exaggeration that I've ever seen I work for the canadian version of the company that this is happening with so I know a lot about the services provided and they do a LOT of good for women that has nothing to do with abortions. The reason this has started is because with recent economic problems lots of women don't have the money they need to spend on their own health services. Lots of people will not be getting PAP smears because they have more critical matters- this can lead to undiagnosed cancer. Fewer STI tests will be done by people who are struggling to get by, Women may not be able to spend as much on birth control and might have to go off of their current method to use a cheaper method. This especially rings true for women on the pill to regulate their period and improve their health because it's not a critical spending area. Giving the gift of health is a really cool idea, in my opinion. They only decided to not restrict abortions because why would they? If you're going to get a 300$ abortion and you have a 25$ gift certificate, why wouldn't they let you use it? It's not like "hey! I got you an abortion for christmas!" it's more like "Don't forget to take care of yourself!"

nah nah what a beautiful place time to exterminate the human race
You do mean to exterminate a bundle of cells that are forming human characteristics, right? The majority of abortions are done in some of the earlier stages of pregnancy. Who cares - its like having a period except getting rid of a fetus instead of an egg.
