Don't think so even if they are in the EU

-- Posted by Maxxie at 1:39 pm on Dec. 9, 2008

You aren't in the schengen treaty so you'll have to go via the border check up

Their not in the treaty - I think the U.K is the only EU country we need a passport to get into.

-- Posted by marshmellowman at 1:42 pm on Dec. 9, 2008

You're out of luck. England haven't signed the Schegen treaty so a passport is required.

-- Posted by Phoenix 1989 at 1:42 pm on Dec. 9, 2008

"You would need to take a passport with you if you were travelling within Europe, because the United Kingdom doesn't have a national identity scheme. The only way that the governments within the European Union know that you're a British citizen definitively is if you carry your passport."

That doesn't matter, England haven't, and probably never will, signed the Schegen treaty which allows passportless border crossing. Countries like France, Germany, etc, all have, which is why you can freely cross from Germany to France, Italy to Austria, etc. England haven't, therefore there is border security and you will need an accepted form of ID, for British citizens that is only the passport unless that is you already have the ID Card Labour are pushing out.

-- Posted by xdark bluex at 1:52 pm on Dec. 9, 2008

yes it is. Because I know people

-- Posted by haniwani at 4:52 pm on Dec. 9, 2008

You definately need one. The only places you can travel with other ID have to be within in the UK.

-- Posted by TheatreMinelli at 10:22 am on Dec. 11, 2008

YES IT IS. You only need a drives license to get to any other country in the E.U

Have you ever done that before? Whcih country was it?

-- Posted by MaryLin at 12:15 pm on Dec. 12, 2008

I don't know what it's like for British citizens but the last time I went abroad (june this year) I had both my ID and new biometric passport with me, they didn't ask for any and just let us through. It's Schengen, you know?
They most likely won't ask for your ID or passport but DO NOT go to a foreign country without ANY identification. Always carry an approved ID with you.

-- Posted by Autumnal at 3:40 pm on Dec. 12, 2008

It isn't possible. You need to send off for a new one.

This is true, but you need a passport to firstly get into Europe, then once inside use a drivers license. So the OP DOES need to get a passport.

From the UK? We don't have open borders, so a passport is definately needed, I don't know what situation you were in to get through.
