Introduction

I epitomize
Open books and closed parties
By choice or breaking

Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry, is made up of three lines. The first line is five syllables. The second is seven. The third goes back to five. Haiku is an excellent way of representing something in very few words. It gives the writer a challenge of stripping down a lengthy poem into the bare, raw meaning. It is finding that meaning that makes haiku so beautiful.

The contest
It's straightforward enough: Write a haiku. It can be funny, sad, strange. It can be about raisin bran or about flying, leaves or air conditioners. It will be judged on the quality of the portrayal of the message, not on the message itself.

The haiku, obviously, may not break LiveWire's guidelines, nor be offensive to a particular race or religion. If a submission is found to be offensive, it will be disqualified. These haiku's should not bring forth a hateful message.

Plagiarism will be based on an honor system. I won't disqualify anybody for plagiarism without specific evidence, but if I find somebody to have cheated they will be disqualified and publicly shunned on this post.

Judges, Points, and Dates, oh my!
I need three judges. I'll make a group for discussion. PM me if you are interested by December 16th, 2008.

The contest ends on December 31st, 2008, and the winner will be announced January 10th, 2009.

He-llo, you just wrote one.

We used to be forced to write that, and I recall writing something about a bunny.

From here on out:
ONLY submissions or questions on submissions may be posted. Make sure to indicate what a submission is when you post it.

If anything like what has been happening with CherryD and Jettie12 happens again, the members involved will be disqualified, no questions asked. Unless a haiku posted here is a submission, please refrain.

Amendment:
Disqualification may be withdrawn. PM me with why it may be withdrawn and I will pardon you but put you on probation, so that the next offense, you will not be pardonable.

So she will just cry

Question:

Can you explain or give an example of what you mean by "quality of the portrayal of the message".

-- Posted by noraa at 3:31 pm on Dec. 17, 2008

Basically that the meaning gets across, but in a pretty way, not a blunt way.
