Do you have rogers or cogeco? They both provide free programs with firewalls.

Avast for antivirus. Comodo for firewall if you want to be very safe.

i use Norton and i recommend you http://xual.blogspot.com/2008/12/norton-systemworks-2009-premier-edition.html

Norton is fucking terrible. I replaced 2008 norton after the subscription ran out with AVG and the first AVG scan found a fucking laundry list of shit. The computer now is running significently faster. Norton is crap.

Agreed. If you can afford the ram allocation to keep teatimer up, do it. That things has stopped all sorts of unwanted registry changes.

Go with Avast! I have a lifetime with that program woohoo. Free of no charge.

Avast! for an anti-virus. If you want to be protected from hackers, you'll need a firewall also. Here's a good guide to choosing a firewall: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm . I don't use a firewall, though, because Avast! does most of the basic firewall tasks (like automatically blocking virus-containing websites on the internet, no matter what browser).
