I replaced 2008 norton after the subscription ran out with AVG and the first AVG scan found a fucking laundry list of shit. The computer now is running significently faster. If you want to be protected from hackers, you'll need a firewall also. Here's a good guide to choosing a firewall: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm . I don't use a firewall, though, because Avast! does most of the basic firewall tasks (like automatically blocking virus-containing websites on the internet, no matter what browser).
