I see nothing good with religion when interpreted literally.
-- Posted by greatescape at 12:42 pm on Dec. 20, 2008
Neutral. It's not the religion that decides benefit or hindrance to society. It's how the religion is practiced by its followers

Bad. Bad, bad, bad. BAD.

I like this. Its really entirely based on how it is interpreted. Religion in itself is not bad. People are.

Religion itself isn't bad - it's what people do with it that is. I mean Christianity for example; it's all about love and acceptance - but it is the religion with the worst history for hate and murdering people simply cause they believe different. Religion is a personal thing - no one should go around preaching it. It's all about what it does for you as a person. Telling someone else they are wrong cause they believe something different is like going into someones house and changing everything in it cause you don't like their style.

It's something that can have both good points and bad points. If you look at the basic points of most religions, it usually says something on the lines of "love other people" or "treat other people with respect". The problem people have is not with religion but its followers. They don't understand that, just as atheists are, they aren't perfect, and that wars will break out in the name of whatever....whether a religion is present or not.

It's not religion directly, it's how it's followers follow it... and what they do. Plenty of places will say how much their local church has helped their community. My church do a lot for the community, plenty of non christians have said how much it benefits out community even just for being helpful and kind. but your right, religious conflict has been very destrustive for society in the past. It's too hard to say.

The common religions distract people from reality and instill false moral values. Most of them involve some sort of faith which is just about the greatest destructive force of humankind. The truly disgusting religions separate humankind from nature. This is the most destructive idea humankind has created.

I agree with you 100% It may not be much but I always keep in mind, humans ARE animals. I like that philosophy.

it depends on what you mean by religion. that's a pretty vague term.

Wars can be started by religion But thats not the religions fault, it is the people who don't accept OTHER PEOPLES religions

"false moral values" I'm curious as to what you think those are. Last time I checked "love your neighbor as yourself" and "Don't kill other people" were pretty good morals. "Most of them involve some sort of faith which is just about the greatest destructive force of humankind." Why?

Without religion, there would be even nuttier people. They'd start more cults for their own individual beliefs, then in a religion itself.

Considering the financial crisis and everything, a piece of fairytale always makes those happier who wish to accept it.

It depends on how a society views and uses it.

How about Matthew 5:27-28:
"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
This is Jesus telling humanity that they will be convicted of thoughtcrime for having a perfectly natural reaction. I know people who, based off of this verse, suffer mentally because they find themselves sexually attracted to people they are not in a relationship with. It's degrading and retarded.

It's no more harmful or beneficial to society than any other abstract idea, like socialism or patriotism. With all of these, it's how it is put into practice that makes all the difference. Going by historical example, I think that religion tends to be good for society. Examples: the Caliphate from 600-1000 AD, Islam in the Ottoman Empire 1500-1700, Al-Andalus from 800-1100. Catholicism after the Counter-Reformation. And there are examples of when religion is bad for society: Taiping China, Al-Andalus after 1100, North Africa after 1100, early second millennium Catholicism, the Byzantine Empire in some periods. Also, Reformation-era Europe. Thirdly, there are also examples of non-religious states where lack of religion could be considered negative: Communist Albania, the Soviet Union, Communist China, other communist states. Also post-Revolution France, for a few years at least. I think the best states have been ones with the separation of church and state. Religion can be good for society, but not when the two are completely intertwined.

Religion is responsible for society. Our greatest advances in technology and civilisation have been inspired by a diety or multiple dieties. Good or a bad thing.. I can't really judge or tell.

No. I think most people are too stupid to comprehend what their own religion teaches, and as a result they muddle things up so badly that religion ends up being an excuse for wrong-doing and immorality rather than what it was originally intended to be.
