Agree or not its a very irresponsible philosophy.
Why?

It encourages you to hold out for more instead of accepting and being happy with what you have got.

Why is it wrong to want something better?I'm happy with my life now but I want more and more in the future. That's not irresponsible.

-- Posted by Guardian at 4:14 am on Dec. 27, 2008

I don't, because that implies you will never be happy, and you'll always be searching for something better, which I can't imagine would be fun.

If everybody accepted what they have nothing would change EVER.

something must be the best...
and at some point you must have that.

I never said they should just accept what they have. I'd imagine they'd reach a point of contentment sometime.

Then people should stop when they feel they're happy. But if they want more it means they're not and they should keep looking.

It is irresponsible. For exactly the reason in the statement, because its always possible for things to be better (at least in this life). You can always want more, you can always improve what you have. That leads to a disposable culture, where people, things, ideas etc are all made into throwaway commodities which are not valued in themselves but grasped at and then disposed of when attained in search of the next better new thing. It is the death of stability, genuine appreciation of people, things and ideas - it breeds discontent and consumerism.

Carts were good but then people invented cars. I don't wish people were still going in carts. I like the computer, and the iPod, and cells. People thought that the earth was flat but that was a dumb idea and it changed. I think life should change.

Some inventions were genuinely worth it. The most obvious being flush toilets and indoor plumbing.

However cars instead of carts. Sure there are advantages, but I'd be quite happy if all we had were carts.
Very few people thought the earth was flat in Europe since the Ancient Greeks discovered that it was round.

Stuff will change whatever you do, there is no need to actively breed discontent to make it change.

Aah, I guess it all depends in the eyes of the person, because to me it suggests that one should always shoot for more, as a goal, not a setback.

I think people are unhappy with the way things are because it's normal to want to change. You think everybody should be like the Amish?

Yes. For me it would be really bad. Everybody thinking the same way and dressing the same way. No electricity. No heating and no air conditioning. No freedom. You couldn't be posting this if you were Amish because you couldn't use a computer. I know you like the computer a lot because you have a red bar.

Maybe I would be better off without one.
But seriously I have nothing against technology persay. Just the ideology which refuses to be satisfied.
