Completly stupid/random/dorky thought that made my brain hurt:

You bump into someone in the park, physically.

You take a step back to realise it's yourself with a hat on.

You reach out and take the hat and put it on.

you then run away as your future self disappears back to the future.

And hour later you are randomly sent back in time.

you meet yourself, who takes the hat off your head and runs away as you are sped back into the future.

Did/Does the hat exist?

Yes, but you don't have the hat anymore. You'll have it in the future, though, so don't worry. :D

My point is the hat must exist for you to take it,

but if you took it from yourself then where did the hat come from?

Meaning it doesnt really exist....

*brain continues to throb*

the who stole the hat?
or the one wearing the hat

the hat exists, but it is trapped in a defined one hour period of time

the real question is, where did the hat come from?

and, i do not know the answer

The one who stole the hat and ran away got sent back in time

The hat clearly exists.

The real question here is where could the hat have come from.

This probably couldn't happen in reality though so it's just sort of a mind fuck.

-- Posted by steath at 12:09 pm on Dec. 28, 2008

WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!

ok so your in the present, run into you, steal your own hat. then go on (into the futer) and get ran into from the past!!!! yess!!!

why would you steal your own hat???

i dont get the whole idea of time travel.
i find it totally confusing, so in films i just go with the flow...

btw, i do not know the answer to the original question.

In order for this to actually occur, the loop must have a beginning - otherwise the matter forming the hat would come out of nowhere (which, in the bounds of space-time is considered an impossibility/breach of the law of conservation).

To  be within the bounds of universal law, it would have to began with, say, one's "future self" picking up said hat in the park and THEN going back in time.

If this (or something similar) never happens, then the hat has never truly existed (and will never exist) as it has come from nowhere.

Yes, the hat does exist else it could not be trapped in that loop.
