This is happening in my town. It's pretty awful what's going on. I'd say it's completely unfair. What say you?

She got fired because her fiance had been married before? That is ridiculous.

-- Posted by sadnessness at 2:55 pm on Dec. 30, 2008

how is that allowed?

well, it's understandable.  my dad who is a devout catholic would look very far down on this "marriage." i'm amazed the church let them get married together.

They didn't get married within the church.

It's not a new story- this has been Catholic policy for as long as I can remember.Working in the Catholic system she would or should have known that. I don't agree with the position but it goes WAY back to some fundamental Catholic (and Anglica, maybe others) doctrine.

I hope that she wins but like the article said, the federal law supports their position and since the war has already been fought before, I don't give her much hope. It's a shame but that's the way it goes.

What say you?

If you're going to work as a Catholic school teacher, you need to respect what that entails. You don't get to ignore the teachings of the church just because it inconveniences you.

She's a stupid woman for thinking she should get to sue. What a Catholic does is a Catholic's business, but what an employee of a religious, Catholic institution does is not just between them and their god.

She wasn't forced to become a Catholic or forced to work in a Catholic institution. What's ridiculous is that she has the nerve to seek legal action against the school.

How is it unfair for a Catholic institution to hold its employees to Catholic standards?

-- Posted by biflexible at 11:05 am on Dec. 31, 2008

PSST. The school employs people not of Catholic faith.

Is there some kind of guarantee of continued employment if the employer's policies aren't followed?

I am fairly certain that this would be illegal in New Zealand, the school would probably end up being fined a few ten thousand dollars, over here.

Should be illegal everywhere else too, though.
