I know this will sound stupid but I would like confirmation. A Mac mini is just a Mac computer which can be connected to your existing monitor and keyboard and mouse. Is that right? Anyone recommend buying one of these?

Yes, that's it. No, don't buy one now. Apple are apparently going to be announcing a new version of the Mac mini at MacWorld in like a weeks time. You'll be buying outdated hardware if you do it now, and at a more expensive price.

yes that is right. they are pretty good, if you feel you want to spend the money, and you have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, sure.

This is it. The new one with have an iMac-like color scheme, the specs will be upgraded, and a discrete graphics card will be added.

Wasn't going to buy it anytime soon, anyway. Have to get some money together first. Thanks for that info.
