I'm black but very light skinned. I am the lightest one in my family(household wise anyways). People at school always puzzled at my race. Some mostly think I'm Puerto Rican, some think I'm half white, someone said I was Indian one time lol

Technically I am like 1/4 or 1/5 white. My great grandfather from my moms side was half white because he's dad was white. I don't know about my dad's side though. He doesn't have many light skinned people in his family. Anyways I came out white and when I tell people that I am black and only like 1/4 white they don't believe me. I tell them that both of my parents are black and they look at me like "WTF?". I always tell them "Look at this hair, does it look white to you?" xD.

When I was born I was lighter than I am now and my eyes used to be Gray.

yeah, people have really narrow ideas of race and always want to put me in one box or another. It's hard to explain too that how you identify your race isn't just how people perceive you, it's also the culture you come from.

Yeah, I have the same problem...so I just stopped explaining.  I hate when people think like that.  a person's race manifests itself differently in everyone.

-- Posted by kidd rune at 6:31 pm on Jan. 2, 2009

You have Caucasoid traits.

I guess you got the more dominant Caucasoid traits and the less dominant Negroid ones.

Good job - you're mixed.

That's what I try to tell people but they are like " No you are very light".

half black maybe

It's cool to be mixed and have ppl not know exactly what you are. Consider yourself lucky!

-- Posted by fantazia at 3:32 am on Jan. 3, 2009

I don't think you look pr or indian.

-- Posted by Mochaa at 2:27 pm on Jan. 3, 2009

You look black, dear. Live with it, because people have a narrow perception of what black is supposed to look like. I dunno where your from, but where I live if you have any amount of black and it's visible (anything from big lips/large nose to kinky hair, any stereotypical black feature), then my friend, you are a negro.

Well, I skimmed and sorry if you weren't, but that's the sort of feeling I got. I understand the difficulty some people have when they don't understand that black people have mixed ancestry too, but I think it's easier to just eliminate all questions by just saying 'Hey, I'm black. Cool."

yeah, that's the vibe I got as well.

To the OP: If your great grandfather was half white, that makes you about  8% white, really. It seems like you are capitalizing on that. Plus the fact that you have pretty ethnic features, for example, a wide nose, curly hair, and big lips. You look very Black to me.

Honestly, it sounds like you wanted to make yourself feel better by posting this.

I just created this topic to show how hard it is trying to tell people I am black without them being like "are you sure one of your parents isn't white?" lol

But you said that you're not fully Black.

If you're 1/4 non-Black than how the hell can you call yourself Black?

I think that if you're 1/2 or 1/4 Black you're not Black, but mixed - if you're 1/8 or 1/16 I'd call you mixed but I guess that's up to you.

That doesn't make it justified.

The one drop rule was made so you could fuck a slave and their kids wouldn't be freed.

Now we're speaking of genetics and if 1/2 or 1/4 of your gene pool is White you shouldn't call yourself Black.

I consider myself black because the black gene is dominant and no one is fully black or white anyways. I am not going to say that I am mixed because people will get the wrong impression that one of my parents is white anyways. If I had half of my genes white then I would call myself mixed. Though since it is so diluted I am pretty much black.

There isn't one Black gene.

I agree - Negroes tend to have more dominant traits - but what's more important is what's in your head, not what you look like.

Yes, and in my head I call myself black as well. Maybe you would call yourself mixed but people have different outlooks. If people had to call themselves mixed just because they have 1/4 or 1/8 of another race than a lot of people would be mixed. Again most people have some type of other race in them down the lines but they would rather call themselves the majority of what they are. If one of my parents or grandparents were white then I would call myself mixed. I don't have any family members that are white really. Besides my moms great grandfather who was white.

But 1/4 and 1/8 is significant enough to be non-Black.

Maybe to someone like you where if your not 100% your race it would be unacceptable to call yourself that race. I consider myself black, period. Granted I do have white in me. But it's not like other blacks don't either. Nor is it confirmed that whites don't have a little black in them. If this was the case a lot of white people probably wouldn't be white by your standards.
