I'm 18. Cus being engaged doesn't mean you must get married like the same year or something. You can wait a few years. I want to start having kids before I'm 30, but I also want at least 6-9 months for an engagement to have time to really make plans and prepare for marriage. All of this dependent on me being with someone I would like to marry. It's how long I would want the engagement to last. And I forgot to say that if you have a plan to get married with him/her some time in the future anyways, getting engaged just shows you're serious about the whole thing, not just fooling around.
