I know this totally feeds my FRAT BRO image, but I'm really not that much of a fraternity guy in the stereotypical sense of the word. In Harry Potter J.K. Rowling sends the reader into a world that is seemingly better then ours, which is why we as the reader are interested in it. The world of Greek Life isn't experienced by too many in the grand scheme of college life, and it is something that is widely considered secretive, mysterious, and misunderstood. Now, frat pledging isn't all about eating shit til you puke and getting beaten, but that's what makes for a good story. My story would be about a kid who decides to pledge a fraternity, and goes through hell but makes it. It'd sound real because, having went through pledging, I can put my emotions into his character. Obviously I wouldn't write about any of my frat's pledging/rituals, but I'd find ones on the web or make some up and embellish them. Does this sound interesting?

Were you to write this, and I do think it could be awesome, be prepared for the following issues: 1) Frat-related people are not going to like if fraternity life is presented as a bad thing, or bad things are done to people 2) I'm sure you know as a frat guy that non-fraternity people have some serious stereotypes about Greek life. You may either feed into them, or these people may just not give a shit about "those assholes" or whatever else they think of Greeks. Those are my thoughts, as someone currently working on a novel as well.
